For such a small and simple object, the promotional bag has a potential to have a many layered effect on its environment. It can advertise, it can endorse (which is a higher form of advertising) and it can, of course, simply carry.

To understand the effect promotional bags may have on their environment, t can be useful to do some lateral thinking. Let’s start by imagining a typical physical shopping environment. This is the place where promotional bags are most likely to be found. When you shop online, you might get a branded packet but you don’t get a bag – because you are not likely to be carrying your parcel anywhere.

The typical shopping environment does one of two things – it either contains multiple stores, or just one. The single store environment is commonly a supermarket – most other large stores cluster together in industrial estates and retail parks. So we can except the supermarket from our general example, as a unique shop type.

Supermarkets fulfil a specific and unalterable human need – the need for food. Their bags are often seen only by other shoppers at the same supermarket, unless the shopper then walks through the street with them (unlikely when a weekly shop has just been done) or gets on a form of public transport. Where most people are driving to and from a supermarket, the advertising value of its promotional bags becomes almost zero, Instead, they serve as a reminder to the shopper to use the same supermarket again next week – particularly if they then kick about the house for seven days, being reused as bin bags.

Outside of this atypical shopping environment, though, we have the norm of a cluster of shops. It is reasonable to assume that a large percentage of the people passing through the mule-shop environment (whether it is a high street or a retail park) are there for the purpose of shopping.

Where these people see large concentrations of promotional bags from a single shop in their immediate environment, the existence of that shop begins to extend beyond its own boundaries. It is no longer true that shoppers have to be looking for it, or to walk past it before they think about it. If every other person they pass is carrying a bag emblazoned with its logo, they’ll be thinking about it way before they see it.

Now let us assume that a person who has come out with the express purpose of shopping is already in a spending frame of mind. Therefore, any “endorsements” he or she sees from other shoppers (who are, however temporarily, effectively part of a clan or tribe whose purpose is to shop) for specific stores may make a subliminal difference between the shops he or she chooses to go in and the ones he or she does not.

All of this is predicated in the idea that the shops whose promotional bags our hypothetical shopper is now seeing, have already raised their brand profile through other advertising avenues. The combination of these two events may prompt a shopper to choose one over another.

Popular specialty items used to create positive impression of a brand are personalized pencils and personalized pens . The most attractive thing about these items – used to propagate and reinforce brand impression for a long period of time – is that they are affordable and effective. However, sometimes it becomes a daunting task to select the right pen or pencil to broadcast the right message, especially with a wide array of options available in colors, styles, materials, patterns etc. But don’t worry; this article will help in making this task as smooth as possible.

You need to invest time to actually think through your brand positioning, the needs of your audience, and your method of distribution, then you will automatically get the answer which pens will work the best for your company. The leading distributers of the promotional pens online say that the company will get best return from the investment, provided they match the product with the targeted market. For this it is important to know the customer’s likes and dislikes, so that you can choose an appropriate product from this wide collection of styles.

The following points will help you to understand how to choose different pens for different purposes.

Metal or gold plated pens to convey quality

Metal or gold pens are used to convey quality, luxury, economy and style! If the product that you manufacture and/or sell is expensive and high-end, then gold plated pens will be best suited to be used as promotional product. If you are still confused, your distributer’s sales representative can help you pick the right product. You can also refer to the online catalog for ideas to choose upscale products.

Environment friendly pens to convey sensitivity

You can select a refillable, PVC-free pen which is made from recycled material such as Bic’s environmentally-friendly personalized pens, if your organization actively supports eco-friendly products. Such pens can also be chosen by the companies that can benefit by associating their brand with environment-friendly items.

Custom made products to convey importance

Custom pencils can be handsomely imprinted wooden pencils, or you can choose a metal or plastic-cased mechanical pencil in a host of styles, colors, and points. If you give someone a custom made product it shows that you care and that the receiver is important for the company. This will build a strong faith of the receiver in the company as it proves you have put in much thought over the gift that you have given them.

Safety products to show that you care

It a product that given as a promotional item also affirms that it is been chosen after researching the safety record of the manufacturer and product itself, then it shows to the receiver that you care. Apart from that, it will not be good for the reputation of the company if anybody is harmed by the product. So make sure your pen is safe, by choosing child-friendly BIC Round Stic pens.

Beauty + Function = Good Design – pen (Photo credit: AmsterdamPrinting.com)

Pretty pens for celebrations

If you add a toy like looking pen in the gift box that you distribute during holidays, it will be able to generate a joyful feeling in the receiver. When you connect to the people in such emotional way, they never forget you and in turn you get loyal lifetime customers. For options in such pens you can look at the novelty pens collection from Bic online.

Tablet and touch screen phone pens

As we are discussing different pens used for different purposes, how can we leave out pens for tablets and smart touch screen phones? With Bic in the promotional pen industry for over forty four years, you can trust their products even when it comes to pens for tablets and smart phones. Try their iStyle Touch Screen Stylus as your next promotional pen and outwit your competitors with this innovative idea.

Method of distribution

The way you distribute your pens or pencils is also very important apart from choosing the right ones. Best suitable place will be a table top promotion in retail outlets, you can also put these pens in goodie bags and distribute to leave a lasting impression. Just keep in mind the need and interest of your target audience and you will get all the answers.

How can promotional pens help in brand building?

It gives a good impression of your company to the receiver when he reads the name of your company on the pen.

Pen is a very useful product, and used by all age groups so it helps in reaching a wide range of people.

Pen is a durable product so a onetime investment can do the promotion for a long time.

It is a low cost product at the same time a very effective advertising instrument.

You can create a small billboard on the pen, while using it as a promotional item.

If you include the contact details on the printing or engraving on pen, it can also serve as a business card.

Conclusion:

Gifting a branded pen or pencil can definitely help in building a positive brand awareness and recall, moreover people like when they receive something extra! Studies have repeatedly shown how promotional products aid in brand recall and faster reorder generation. More studies have confirmed that over fifty percent of the promotional product recipients are using the product daily and also return to do business with the company that gave it to them. Further they reasserted that they had a positive impression of the company that gave promotional items.

A good marketing campaign has several layers. First, it is noticeable. Second, it lasts beyond the initial costs of advertising. And, lastly, it gives people a positive feeling about your company.

While many business owners try to figure out how to penetrate their target audience between print, Internet, and television ads, more creative entrepreneurs are thinking 3-dimensionally with promotional products so that they can not only reach out to customers, but also so they can stay with them, and possibly be promoted by proxy.

Types of Promotional Items

The most common kind of promotional item you can find is a pen. Companies have pens made usually for as little $0.15 each, allowing them to give them out freely to customers when they come in. It is inexpensive and easy for everyone.

The problem with pens, however, is that customers are so bombarded with advertising through the day that this item may as well not have your logo or phone number. The average customer is blind to it and as this item is lost, it is truly of no consequence to them.

This is why it is better to spend the extra money to have calendars or mugs made. Calendars are referenced for important events and reminders. When your customers get their morning cup of coffee they see your business logo. When they look up their next doctor’s appointment, they may also remember that they may need your services as well.

A mug also allows you to reach the next generation. As the child of your customer drinks from the mug you gave his parents when he was just a small boy, he becomes so familiar with your business that he is much more likely to be a customer when he is older as a result.

Now that we know the kind of promotional products out there, it is important to know why they are important.

Why use Promotional Products?

Along with reminding people you are in business, these items give people a good feeling about you and your company. People like free stuff and if you don’t give it to them, they will get it elsewhere.

“Joe” is a great example of this. He owns an auto body shop specializing in fast oil changes. One year Joe had water bottles made up because he was sponsoring a local 5k. When the race was over he had about a dozen water bottles left over, so he gave them to the first customers he saw that Monday. It might sound silly, but they were very excited to get them.

The next year he had another idea: to make travel mugs. He had 1,000 of them made for $5.50 each, and put up a sign that said, “Any customer serviced before 9am gets a free travel mug.” He had so much early morning business that month that he soon had to put up a sign that said, “Sorry. We are out of travel mugs.”

Promotional Products Spark Your Marketing Creativity

Just like with Joe and his auto shop, business owners who think in terms of giving to their customers spark creativity that allows them to think, ‘what would I like from a business I use?’

In answering this question, more value can be provided to customers. When customers receive increased value – be it a coffee cup, a calendar, or beer koozies – they are reminded in a positive way of the great service they had previously received. This brings repeat

business and a handsome return on the original investment made into a deeply penetrating form of advertising.

There are three facts to the advertising gifts industry – the supplier, the distributor and the buyer. The supplier makes the products; the distributor distributes them; and the buyer buys them.

The industry as a whole has a different personality to most – in that its basic product may be almost anything. As long as it can be branded, or used in some way to promote a brand or business, then it counts. That means there are theoretically as many suppliers working in the industry as there are types of buyable item in the market; and that the overall industry expertise has to lie in processes rather than in the absolute manufacture of a single type of thing.

To put the above in context: a brewery merely has to concentrate on making good beer; and packaging, marketing and distributing it in a way that satisfies its customers. Over the years, the brewery develops an expertise specifically tied in with the actual practical considerations involved in making and transporting a single type of product.

The advertising gifts industry, on the other hand, encompasses all product types: edible; potable; wearable; usable; and everything in between. Each type of product has its own requirements in terms of storage and shipping – and of course manufacture too. Yet the industry must function as a coherent whole, offering what its customers see as its actual product – which is essentially the ability to answer any promotional need with the right kinds of advertising gifts.

It is important to note that advertising gifts may not be the same thing as (for example) promotional items. That is to say, there are different classes of promotion served by the industry, for which different kinds of item are appropriate. In broad terms, an advertising gift may be seen as something specifically given to customers or clients, with the sole purpose of remaining them about a brand or of advertising a brand or product in some way. They are, in other words, unsolicited and tied only to a promotion.

A promotional item, on the other hand, could be something like a carrier bag or a box – an item of packaging, which is branded and designed to impart emotion and other advertising information to the customer, owner or user – but which is not given away as a gift so much as incorporated into the while buying experience. Here, the promotional product becomes part of the scenery of purchase, and is as such distinguishable from the advertising gift: which is designed to encourage future purchases.

It’s easy to see, from the foregoing, that the advertising gifts industry is more complex and targeted than such a smorgasbord business model might at first suggest. As a result, the only coherent product that can be pulled from it is that of service – an intangible element, but the one that causes buyers to seek out distributors and suppliers. The true sale, in any advertising gifts transaction, is of reliability and trustworthy service, rather than of any one individual piece of equipment or gift.
