For most homeowners, the kitchen is probably the most crucial part of the entire house. This is clearly evident in the amount of money as well as the number of hours that goes into the process of constructing and remodelling a kitchen. Structuring your budget for this project should be done at the onset even prior to hiring a design professional. Advance and proper planning can help you avoid delays and extra costs.

You may start gathering information by creating a short list of the following:

Via Flickr under CC BY 2.0

• Price – You need to have an average estimate of your materials. Ask for the price of benchtops (only if you are planning to install a new benchtop in your home).

• Specifications – Get all the exact measurements especially if you are doing a DIY project. If you are planning to replace certain features such as a worktop, you should check if your list contains details about the length, depth, thickness, and the type of timber.

Reasons for Remodelling Projects

If it is time to invest more in your existing kitchen, then prepare all the information needed first. Essentially, remodelling or redecorating kitchens is done in order to solve quality and space problems. Many homeowners turn to kitchen redecorating for the following reasons:

• To add new features in the kitchen such as timber bench tops, drawers, etc.

• To use the latest products

• To apply new design ideas

• To incorporate more environmentally-safe kitchen materials

The perfect time to undertake this project is when your kitchen has already lost its functionality. Aside from this, an outdated kitchen looks unappealing. If this is the case, then grab this chance to apply the much needed adjustments.

Trends

New ideas strongly influence the trends in kitchen designs. For instance, a study conducted by the National Association of Home Builders Research Centre in 2001 reveals that more than sixty percent of remodelling projects widely involved the addition of kitchen islands, pantries, second sink, and open shelves.

Among the most popular products and materials widely used for kitchen remodelling and construction include:

• Countertop Materials – For kitchen tops features like timber bench tops, the most highly rated materials are laminate, solid surface, and granite.

• Flooring Materials – According to a survey, most residential homeowners prefer sheet vinyl, ceramic tile, and hardwood.

• Wood Materials – Red oak, hard maple, and cherry are some of the most popular choices among homeowners.

• Kitchen Remodelling Materials- Some of the most common kitchen remodelling materials often include ceramic tile, sheet vinyl, vinyl tile, and laminate.

Redecorating Your Kitchen: Is there a Perfect Time?

According to Morris and Winter’s Theory of Housing Adjustment, a kitchen remodelling project qualifies as housing adjustment. The theory suggests that if the current design and features cause dissatisfaction among the household members, then housing adjustments become an urgent concern.

Moreover, redecorating projects are done when space issues emerge. For instance, you may decide to add new features and modify existing ones like installing timber bench stops in your unit. Most homeowners also complain about inadequate counter space, floor space, and cabinet storage.

Recommended Steps

1) Identify your problem – In most instances, people decide to redecorate because of poor ventilation and lighting, inefficient kitchen appliances, insufficient space, inaccessible features, and decorative concerns.

2) Gather relevant information – Explore more possibilities. You have already figured out what did not work before so now is the right time to be more creative. Workshops, home design shows, and the Internet are rich sources of design inspiration.

3) Weigh your options wisely – At this point, ask for recommendations from reliable sources. You may also consult a design professional who can guide you in the process.

4) Look for the right materials and design – Since most activities in the kitchen are mostly food related, choosing the right kind of material is vital. As you start looking for the materials, be clearly guided by the type of other non-food activities that you do in the kitchen such as answering calls, family conversation, meal planning, etc.

Professional Help

Finally, always seek the services of a licensed and reputable design professional or contractor. There are several ways to go about when you plan to redecorate your kitchen. Ideally, hiring a skilled and licensed professional will help you a lot especially if you want to avoid overcapitalising and wasting precious time.

Kitchen is perhaps the most important part of any home after living and drawing rooms. No matter how well arranged and decorated your home is, if your kitchen is in tatters the house will not be able to impress the visitors. As a fact of matter, a well maintained and beautiful kitchen will not only make your life easy but will also add elegance and value to your beloved home.

Kitchen Renovation Ideas:

Following lines elaborate some of the most important things to consider while planning for kitchen remodeling. That is why we so often see it in commercial kitchens.

Using Quality Materials:

This sounds quite common but choosing quality material for renovation is absolutely necessary. For instance, high standard drawer’s slides and hinges will ensure that drawers do not stick and cabinet doors remain closed. Therefore, you should try not to buy cabinets made up of particle board or that those are stapled together. In this regard wood veneer is always more durable than particle board, laminate, melamine and MDF.

Cabinet Heights:

Keep you cabinets as high as your ceiling as they will offer you extra storage allowing you to hand your favorite artworks such as a digital canvas printing on empty walls. Furthermore, you can also put open shelves on additional space available enabling you to keep your kitchen in apple pie order.

Decide Between Paint or Stain:

Although, stained wood furniture has been in vogue for ages yet it dates very quickly and not easily alterable either. On the other hand, brushes painted cabinets are long lasting, paint is easily replaceable and they offer much more choices and varieties to choose from.

The Elegance of Countertop:

Apart from cabinets, another indispensible part of kitchen is countertop and you have to make it as elegant as possible. In this regarding combining Carrara marble (honed or acid washed and sealed) with stained wood will enhance the warmth and the beauty of the kitchen. If you want to make countertop bit more sophisticated, you can also use Wiarton limestone, honed kirkstone slate, soapstone or plastic laminate with a wooden edge.

Installing a Working Island:

While placing a cube in the middle of the room, beware that the island offers an open and airy looks. In most idle situation, the island should not be clustered by kitchen appliances. If however, you want to place things lick dishwashing sink combo or cooktop on the cube, always try to maintain the light looks of a laggy harvest table.

Do not Go for Deep Details:

Design patterns like hanging picture canvas prints and plaster moldings and pediments over stoves can create a dashing ambiance. However, always try to avoid overdoing details as the more complex the decoration is more grotesque will kitchen become. Furthermore, always keep the theme of your kitchen compatible with rest of the home.

Use Basic Appliances:

Instead for going for plethora of appliances and gadgets, stick to some elegant and reliable ones those are actually needed. For example, rather than purchasing separate wall ovens and a cooktop, you should select a commercial quality stainless steel range as it covers less space and is more convenient to use as well.

Conclusion:

Finally, you should try to add interest in your kitchen by finding unique yet enchanting furniture. Moreover, try to keep kitchen surface simpler and easy to wash to avoid maintenance cost.

There are many differences between France and the US. When you go you have to be prepared to stand out. It’s pretty difficult to blend in on the street, especially if you don’t know French.

But standing out on the street is nothing compared to the challenges that await you in the kitchen of your rental flat in Paris.

Where Is All My Space?

This is the first obstacle you will face. Kitchens in Paris rental flats are tiny. Really tiny. The space is even proportionally smaller than a kitchen in a similarly-sized apartment in New York. There are complex reasons for this that we’ll get to later.

Counter space is limited. Cabinet space is often crammed in overhead because it’s limited underneath by, yes, a washing machine. Because of the expense the number of pipes and drains was limited to basically the kitchen and the bathroom. The washing machine would have to be in one of these two areas, and, obviously, the kitchen is the better choice. Later it became normal and expected so it’s present in even newer buildings. If you have a dryer, it’s in the kitchen, too.

So be prepared to work in a small space.

Is That Tiny Thing My Refrigerator?

Yes it is. Don’t look around for a separate unit somewhere. You get just one tiny fridge, and that’s it. But don’t worry about it. You can handle it if you make a few simple changes:

Get used to cooking fresh—it’s part of the reason why Europeans tend to be healthier than Americans, and you’ll love it

Get friendly with your local market—it’s part of the Paris experience to drop in on your local market almost daily to pick up ingredients to cook tonight

Store foods differently—Parisians often store fresh herbs on their balconies and cheese on their counters. If it’s used in a reasonable time frame, cheese stores well this way.

Follow these tips and you’ll be surprised at how well you get along with a very small refrigerator.

How Many Grams in a Cup of Comté?

If you are planning on trying to cook American recipes in Paris, you might want to pack your measuring cups. In France and other European countries, many recipes are written in weights rather than in volumes like in the US. If you’re lucky, your kitchen will have a scale. If not, you’ll have to buy one. But don’t expect to find the measuring cups you’re used to. Even if you do find some, they’ll be metric.

Why the Differences?

The home is the physical embodiment of culture. People design physical spaces not just around their utility, but around perceptions of their utility. In France, cooking in the home has traditionally been regarded as an undignified necessity, which is why the kitchen was often designed as a small, separate space that excludes guests.

In the US, people are proud of cooking, part of our general perception that labor is ennobling. Of course, this extends more to the ostentatious preparation of a space in which one could cook but rarely does. The result is that the kitchens are typically made into inviting spaces—think how many parties you’ve been to where you spent a great deal of time in the kitchen.

In Paris, if you want to avoid offense, don’t barge into your host’s kitchen or offer to help preparation or clean-up, even if you can fit.

In spite of the fact that most people now have both a washing machine and a dishwasher in their kitchen, women particularly, still spend a good deal of their time at the kitchen sink. Whether you are washing delicate items of clothing by hand, cleaning up generally, or hand rinsing and polishing your best crystal glasses, this is usually done at the sink.

If you are remodelling your kitchen or moving house, the kitchen sink is an important item. Most of the work that is done in a kitchen takes place by the sink and is it’s important that you get the right kind of sink both for your kitchen and your needs. Modern sinks are meant to go with the rest of your kitchen design, rather than simply being something white and useful stuck in the corner.

Designer Kitchen Sinks

What type of sink you choose will depend largely on the type of kitchen you have. If you want a designer kitchen sink then you really need to shop around. Designer sinks such as Capel sinks come in different shapes and sizes and are constructed from a variety of materials including the following:

Glass

Ceramic

Granite

Soap stone

Stainless steel

Porcelain

Both granite and specially toughened glass designer sinks come in a range of colours and some of these are available as double sinks. The most popular of all these materials stills seems to be either stainless steel or porcelain. Many such sinks have an under structure of cast iron, which means that they are extremely durable and often available in a wide range of colours.

The Sink with the Mostest

In this day and age a sink is not just a sink, it can incorporate a chopping board, a strainer, a colander and a drying rack. If you want this type of all purpose sink than you can expect to pay a good deal of money to have one installed. If you are looking for something that will not totally break the budget there are still plenty of fabulous sinks to choose from.

Green Sinks

Modern sinks do come in a variety of colours, however, the type of green sinks mentioned here are designed for the environmentally conscious. Ecologically sound sinks are usually made from magnesium oxide – ceramic cement. The manufacture of green sinks is carried out in an environmentally friendly way needing less energy to produce. A green sink can also absorb carbon dioxide so it helps in the fight against global warming.

Soap Stone Sinks

Old fashioned soap stone sinks are making a big comeback. These sinks are as near heat and stain resistant as you are likely to get – making sink cleaning a whole lot easier. An occasional rub with mineral oil will help your sink to retain its good looks. If you are looking for a great sink on a budget, it’s often possible to pick these up at second hand shops or dealers for a fraction of the price of a new one.

Organization is a challenge for many people who’s daily lives get so busy. With work, school, spouses, families and kids all vying for your time, staying organized may not be at the top of your “to do” list. But, as we do recognize that there are few precious minutes in the day to focus on organizing your home, if you had some tools that would make it easier along the way, you will actually save time! Why? Because if we have a dedicated space to put something away, and we make the effort to put it away in the same spot every time, we will always know where that item is and that can make your life flow so much easier.

Here’s a few tips to help you get organized at home and stay that way:

Do Not Strive for Perfection

The most important thing to achieving an organized home and life is to just make the commitment to follow the rules you have set in place. If it’s “sort the mail right when it comes” (instead of letting it stack up on the kitchen table), then make it a point to do that. But, don’t beat yourself up by striving for perfection. Just accomplishing the task is what is important here, not how perfectly it is done. Be sure to praise yourself with a reward system when you have staying with your new rules for at least 3 weeks. It takes 21 days to form a new habit, so, after 3 weeks you are well on your way to sticking with your routine.

Everything in Its Place

Don’t be tempted to create a box or bin that you label or tell yourself is “miscellaneous”. After a few days, you will not remember what is in there, and then you’ve just created a box of disorganization, and are not furthering your cause to stay organized at home. Now, this doesn’t have to be an expensive task. You can get plastic bins from the $1 store to sort and organize every room, drawer and closet. Once you decide which box or drawer is for “hairclips” and which one is for “Sally’s Toys”, you may want what’s inside to be easier to find as well. There are great organizers and inserts available with pockets and elastic bands that make it very easy to store and find even the tiniest items. Many are small enough that you can remove it from the box or drawer and take it with you. This is especially helpful with cell phone can camera cords (and memory chips), hair accessories, items you want to move in and out of your purse and kids toys.

Involve Others

Unless you live alone, you certainly cannot do this task by yourself or you will always be the one constantly cleaning and organizing the whole house for everyone. Be sure to get every member of the family involved and make sure they are clear on what the new routine is in order for you to achieve success throughout the household. They may even find that it’s fun to stay organized if each one gets to choose their own color storage bin or basket.
Best of luck and happy organizing!

Your Guide to Spring Cleaning

In the first warm days of the year, many of us feel a strong desire to clear out the winter cobwebs, both figuratively and literally. Spring cleaning involves not only getting rid of dust and dirt, but ridding your home of clutter. Most of us keep our homes neat enough so that spring cleaning isn’t too tough, but if you do have a big job ahead, use the steps below as a quick guide.

In the Kitchen

Wherever there’s cooking being done, bacteria can gain a foothold. Your kitchen should be cleaned daily, but if it’s in need of an in-depth cleaning, here’s how you go about it. Begin by emptying your pantry or food storage area, throwing away expired food and sorting or donating what’s still good. Wipe your cupboards out and replace shelf paper, if applicable. Do the same for drawers, and wipe down your countertops (even behind the toaster, coffeepot and microwave).

Empty your refrigerator, getting rid of expired food. Clean its interior with soapy, warm water and allow to dry before food is replaced. Seals should be wiped as well; don’t use bleach which can weaken them. Clean the refrigerator’s coils using an attachment on your vacuum cleaner, and if you can, sweep behind the fridge as well.

Use a paste of water and baking soda to clean your stove and oven. Baking soda is mildly abrasive and is great for removing grease and grime; it can also be used in paste form to clean your sink. Vinegar is a great sanitizer, and it can be used in a variety of ways (run frozen vinegar cubes through your garbage disposal, or add a cup to clean your dishwasher).

The Bedroom

Your bedroom is where you go to relax at the end of a long day, and as such, it should be one of the first areas to receive a spring cleaning. Start with your bed, removing pillows, blankets and sheets. Wash pillows and dry on low heat, adding a tennis ball to the dryer to keep them fluffy. While the pillows are drying, wash your sheets and flip your mattress. Move the bed out from the wall, cleaning debris and wiping baseboards. Vacuum the area, and put the bed back into place.

Remove curtains, launder them, and clean windowsills with diluted bleach or a multipurpose cleaner. If you have blinds, use a vacuum attachment or a duster. Dust your furniture and ceiling fan, and then vacuum the floor. Once your curtains are dry, re-hang them.

Bathroom

Your bathroom is one of the dirtiest areas in your home, and because they’re often enclosed, bacteria find their way in. If there’s a window, open it to allow fresh air to get in, or turn on the vent fan. Remove everything from the countertops and clean with a soft cloth and a disinfectant. Wipe out the sink as well, and clean mirrors with vinegar. Scrub your bathtub and toilet with cleanser, and apply disinfectant generously to the toilet’s outside.

Now is a good time to go through your medicine cabinets and drawers, removing anything that’s unneeded or expired. Wipe them thoroughly before replacing items, and finish the room by mopping the floor with a sanitizer.

The Living Room

For most of us, the living room is the most-used areas in the entire house. As such, it’s full of furniture and electronics that need cleaning. Start by cleaning your drapes and throw rugs; dust tables and picture frames with a microfiber rag. Go through all your books, games, and DVDs, donating or putting in self storage what you don’t want. Wipe baseboards with a gentle cleaner, and use a telescoping duster to clean any ceiling fans. Vacuum around and under furniture, and return everything to its proper place.
