The History of Numerology

A History of Numerology

Numerology is an ancient form of divination and its popularity continues to grow today, especially in western society where numerology is based on the Pythagorian system. Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician and philosopher, combined the mathematical disciplines of Druid, Egyptian, Arabic and Essene sciences and created one of the most popular and long lasting methods of self-help that involves studying various numbers to gain knowledge about the universe and someone’s path and personality traits.

Pythagoras believed that the world was built upon numbers and that the entire universe consists of mathematical patterns therefor everything can be expressed in numbers including words, names birthplaces and birth dates and all these things determine someone’s destiny, fortune and personality.

In ancient Greece, people recorded numbers in geometrical figures or dots. When odd numbers, numbers that could not be separated, occurred they were considered masculine and associated with creativity, power and assertion. The numbers capable of being split were considered feminine and they represented stability, weakness and wholeness.

The number 888 was associated with the “Higher Mind” in ancient Greece, while 666 represented the “Mortal Mind”. 666 is considered the number of the Beast in the New Testament.

In the early days of Hebrew, numbers were considered very important and as Greeks believed there was a connection between the higher forces of the universe and numbers.

Both Hebrews and Greeks considered ten to be the perfect number. Pythagoras believed that number ten contains all harmonic and arithmetic proportions.

Ten is also an important number in Kabbalah, the mystical interpretation of the Bible. In Kabbalah, it is believed that there are ten emanations of numbers out of nothing. These ten emanations formed the ten sephiroth of the The Tree of Sephiroth, also known as the Tree of Life. The Tree of Sepiroth is the symbol of all knowledge and path to God.
Numerical mysticism was also popular during Middle Ages when the German Kabbalists developed another mystic interpretation of the Scriptures called gematria.
