Hard water is one of those stealthy home maintenance problems that often escapes detection – that is, until you notice those scaly, dingy stains on tubs and sinks, or your water pressure begins to drop. While hard water poses no hazards to your health, it can eat away at water pipes and cause other irritating problems, like less-than-lustrous hair or mineral stains on your favorite clothes.

In many parts of the United States, hard water is a problem – from Florida to North Dakota and points in between, you may have excessive minerals in your tap water that can cause problems over time.

1. Sub-par showers

If you feel like your hair is limp and lifeless, the problem could be hard water. The minerals in hard water can build-up in hair and make it heavy. They also make it more difficult to get a good lather with shampoo – and in turn, you may end up using more shampoo in an attempt to get your hair clean.

You may also find that your once-robust shower head has scaly deposits that reduce water pressure, making it harder to rinse all that shampoo out of your hair. The end result is a disappointing shower that leaves you feeling less than squeaky-clean.

2. Soap scum

Hard water doesn’t just leave shampoo in your hair and a soapy film on your skin, it also causes unsightly rings or spots around your bathtub. These stains can be especially stubborn and difficult to get scrub away. Why do these spots settle in your bathroom? Hard water contains high amounts of magnesium, calcium and iron, and these substances act as a magnet for soap, making it cling to the tub or shower walls.

3. Dingy clothes

If you have hard water, don’t expect your laundry to turn out fluffy and fresh. The magnesium and calcium in your water can sometimes leave yellowish discolorations, streaks, spotting and stains on your clothing. These minerals may also give your laundry a dingy appearance and create a stiff feel that is anything but pleasant.

4. Dry, irritated skin

If your skin is constantly dry and irritated, your water might be the reason behind your beauty woes. When hard water leaves a soapy film on your body and hair after you bathe, it actually dries out your skin and makes it difficult for products to soak in and provide that much-needed moisture.

5. Uneven water pressure

The minerals in hard water can accumulate over time in your pipes, significantly restricting the flow of water, and creating poor or uneven water pressure around your house. If you’ve noticed that the flow of water from your faucets has slowed to a sad drip, hard water buildup might be to blame.

Many homes around the United States struggle with problems caused by hard water, but water softener dealers nationwide understand the particular problems in your local water supply. A professional can recommend the best course of action for you – like whether you need a home filtration system or water softener.

If you’re tired of scrubbing scaly deposits around your home, find out what’s in your water and take steps to make it better.

Making sure your body is properly hydrated when taking part in any form of sport or exercise is very important, both in terms of safety and performance. You’ll lose fluid through your pores from sweating as your body attempts to cool itself down, and also through the air that you’re breathing out as you exert yourself. Without sufficient fluid in your system you can become dehydrated quickly and this can have a negative effect on your health as well as have a serious impact on your ability to perform and continue exercising or competing. Taking too much water on board can also be a problem though, so ensure you do not take things to the other extreme.

When it comes to cycling, staying hydrated is just as important as if you were running or playing a game of rugby. Of course the amount of effort that you need to put into your hydration regime depends a lot on the type of ride that you’re doing. If it is a simple commute into work then you’re not going to have to do any real preparation and a bottle of water attached to your bike should suffice. If however you are preparing for a major ride into the mountains or perhaps are about to take part in a competition then you will need to spend time considering your strategy.

Don’t go overboard though

Taking on fluid ahead of exercise is important. It will get you off on the right footing and will help to prevent problems occurring once you have set off. However, remember not to go overboard as all that will happen is that you’ll be searching for toilet stops every five minutes once you have set off. An hour or two before you plan to get underway start to sip a 16-ounce drink and then go for a few gulps of water every quarter of an hour or so while you are on the bike.

Simple solutions work

While on the bike, a water bottle can be the simplest and most cost effective way to stay hydrated. However, if you are going on a long ride in high temperatures then there is a good chance you will not be able to hold enough water this way. In this situation, something like a CamelBak hydration pack is the way forward. It will rest easily against your back out of the way and provide you with a simple and accessible source of fluid.

When it comes to what to drink, then for most people involved in moderate exercise, water will be fine. It’s only when you are really pushing yourself is it necessary to think about specialist sports drinks as these also contain carbohydrates and electrolytes, which will allow your body to keep going for longer.

So keep hydrated

Staying hydrated is pretty straight forward once you have the necessary equipment and knowhow, but it’s always important to remember that the best thing you can ever do is listen to your body. If it’s telling you to ease up then pay attention! And remember, rather than worrying too much about hydration when you are about to leave on a ride, think about it continually every day. Staying hydrated is important for the body and it shouldn’t be something that you only start to think about before or during exercise.

Plastic plates and cups are things that every family has in its kitchen. They are very good to be used when you have small children, which can break the other stuff and get cut. They are a little unstable but still very good for the purpose.

There is another situation in which the plastic cups and plates can be very useful and this is when you are going to picnic or somewhere out on the open and it is not good to bring glass with you.

Unlikely the other sets that are made of porcelain and can be easily washed, the biggest disadvantage of the plastic things used for food is that they often get dirty from the stuff that is put inside them and the stains are not so easy to be removed. With the time this stains do not fade, just the opposite they get worse and nastier. That is why they have to be removed using special cleaning ingredients and the sooner you remove the spots the easier it will be for you.

Several methods of cleaning will be suggested in the article and everyone can pick the one that seems the most suitable. The vinegar way to clean is the most used and famous one, as many people know how useful it can be for cleaning of so many things. Except the vinegar you will also need water, soap and a bucket. You can start as you put the dirty objects in a container that can hold them all. Pour water and vinegar as you use equal parts of them both. The objects you will like to clean have to stay in this mixture. The more stubborn the stain is, the longer you should leave your dirty cups and stains in the bucket or container. An overnight should be enough even for the hardest cases. When you take the plastic things out of the water wash them with mild soap and water. Dry them and if there is nothing dirty left they are ready. Repeat the soaking in the water and vinegar when it is necessary.

The other method of cleaning includes the use of alcohol and bleach. Put the thing you are going to clean inside an empty bowl or bucket. Because alcohol and bleach can harm many surfaces, make sure that the vessel you have chosen will catch any drips falling from the plastic things you will be cleaning. Pour the alcohol directly on the dirty places and scrub the area, as you use rubber gloves, which will help you protect the skin on your hands. Let it stay like this for several minutes and take the bleach then. Put in on the dirty parts along with the alcohol and once more let it stay like this for several minutes. Then you can rinse with warm water. Make sure you have washed both alcohol and bleach very good. To be sure you have removed any residues from the last detergents you can wash the plates and cups one more time with your dishwashing cleaner or mild soap.

Believe it or not the sunshine can also be very helpful when it is combined with lemon juice. You will need one lemon fruit which should be cut in two pieces. Take one of them and rub the problematic area with it. Right after that leave the plastic item on direct sunlight. The interaction between the lemon juice and the sun has the power of bleach, with the only difference that there are no dangerous liquids and unpleasant smell.

When you head out on a sailing trip, it usually means you will be away from home for a long period of time. There are some tasks that you must not forget to do before you leave. These are things that will keep your home safe while you are away. Follow this checklist to prepare for a long sailing vacation.

Shut the Water Off

It is Murphy’s Law that if you have a burst pipe, it will happen while you are on vacation. You can avoid this disaster by shutting off the water supply to your house before you leave on your sailing trip. There is a valve in the house that will shut off all the water to the interior of the house. The valve is usually located in the basement. This valve will not shut off outside water, so your automatic sprinklers will still keep your lawn healthy while you are gone.

Check Your Sump Pump

A burst water pipe is not the only thing that can cause flooding while you are away on your sailing vacation. A flash flood can quickly flood a basement. Make sure your house is ready for this by checking the sump pump before you leave.

Adjust the Thermostat

You can save some money on your electric bill by turning the thermostat to a lower or higher setting. Turn the temperature down to 50 degrees if you are going sailing in the winter. Turn it up to 90 degrees if you are going in the summer. This will save you a bundle on your energy bill while you are gone, but it won’t allow the temperature to get extreme enough to do any damage to the house.

Unplug Things

Another great way to save electricity while you are on a sailing trip is to go around the house and unplug things. Many electronic devices continue to draw power even when they are not in use. Unplug almost everything in the house. The only thing that you really need to leave plugged in is the refrigerator.

Leave the Lights On

English: J/42 cruising and racing sailboat sailing upwind in Penobscot Bay, Maine. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

If your home is not protected by a home security system, you may wish to leave some lights on to deter burglars. You can set these lights up on a timer. Set the timer so the lights go on when it gets dark. Have the timer set so the lights then turn off around your normal bedtime. This trick is a great way to fool prowlers that might be otherwise tempted tor strike while you are away sailing.

Store Valuables

You may want to put your most valuable items under lock and key at a storage facility while you are gone. This will keep you from worrying about them wile you are sailing on the ocean.
