If you’re carpets are looking a little threadbare, or you want to add some warmth and colour to your hardwood floors, a rug is the perfect ddcor accessory. This simple item can transform the look of a room, taking it from drab to beautiful in just a few seconds.

So how should you use a rug to make a room look more inviting and stylish? Here, we share a few easy tips which will help you to do this.
Balance things out
A rug is a fantastic item with which to counteract any excessively bold colour or patterns in the room, or conversely, to add a splash of colour to an otherwise neutral space. So for instance, if the fabric of the curtains and the sofa in your living room is quite ‘busy’, you can use a block coloured rug to balance this out. Similarly, if the room is filled with plain, simple and neutral toned furnishings, a bright, jewel toned rug will bring the space to life.

Get creative
Think outside the box when it comes to choosing a rug and take your particular home into consideration for instance, you might love the look of a beautiful, large Persian rug, but this might not work well if your home is quite small or is decorated in a minimalist style. There are thousands of rugs for sale, in every shape, size and pattern imaginable, so don’t limit yourself to the traditional rectangular shape, or the classic colours and patterns, if these don’t fit in with your own personal tastes. Most importantly, make sure to carefully measure the space in which you intend to put the rug, before you start to shop, as you don’t want to discover the perfect rug, buy it and find out that it’s too big for the room. You may also want to invest in a rug liner if you are putting the rug on hardwood floors.

Create a focal point
If you’ve just started to decorate the room and are not sure what decorative direction to take, you can use the rug as your starting point; for example:
– A beautiful rug in the centre of a space can serve as the ideal focal point and you can base your choice of other soft furnishings on the tones and patterns in the rug.
– If you want to use one room for multiple purposes for example, if you want to use a section of your living room as a small home office of sorts, a rug can help you to achieve this.
– You can section off a particular corner of a room by using a rug in the area that you want to partition and another rug around which you can focus the main attention of the room.

These are very simple but effective ways to visually divide up room space. However, make sure that the rugs style, shape and colour complement one another they needn’t be identical, though – there are lots of rugs for sale which are similar looking and work well together aesthetically.

Our home is the space that reflects our personality and style. The way we decorate and maintain our home is influence by our lifestyle. The same is the case with selection of paint for our home. But apart from our personal choice and preferences, there are certain things to be considered while selecting paint for the house.

The paint colour that one chooses for the room should have direct bearing on the size and décor theme of the room. While bright and bold colours like red and orange would suit large rooms, it is the pastel shades like light blue and green that would look good in small rooms. Similarly for a more soothing effect one should go for shades of the same colour where as colours that are opposite in the colour wheel like blue and orange should be used together for a more bright appearance.

Paints are mainly available in latex or oil based form. While latex paint is easy to clean and long lasting, oil based paints are used as primer for wood moldings. The thumb rule is that the glossier the paint the easier it is to clean it up. Hence it would be a wise decision to use glossy paints in kid’s room and those areas which tend to get dirty fast like the kitchen. But imperfections, if any, would be more apparent if glossy paints are used as it provides a smooth and even finish. If glossy paint seems to be more shiny and expensive, then one can opt for semi-glossy or satin finish paint which is more budget friendly. Exactly opposite to the glossy finish is the matt finish paint. This paint is best suited on walls with lots of imperfection as the matt finish can conceal all irregularities.

Existing décor and theme of the room plays a very important role in selecting the paint. If the theme of décor of the room is traditional then one should go for lighter tones like beige and white whereas colours like pink and green would be apt for a more casual décor.

Light is another factor that affects the selection of paint. If the room gets more natural light, then there is no harm in going for bold color. On the other hand a room with less natural light should definitely have light colored walls to make the room look bright and airy. Similarly there are certain rooms that are hit by direct sunlight. The paint in the room tends to fade fast when compared to other. This should also be considered while selecting the paint color.

Last but not the least; the budget factor should also be taken into consideration. This is especially so for new owners who might not know the hidden and other related cost of painting. As the quality of paint goes up so does the cost. Similarly certain colours might need 2-3 coat of paint to get the desired effect which can again push up the cost.

A careful consideration of all above factors helps in making the painting job less expensive and cumbersome.

In the first warm days of the year, many of us feel a strong desire to clear out the winter cobwebs, both figuratively and literally. Spring cleaning involves not only getting rid of dust and dirt, but ridding your home of clutter. Most of us keep our homes neat enough so that spring cleaning isn’t too tough, but if you do have a big job ahead, use the steps below as a quick guide.

In the Kitchen

Wherever there’s cooking being done, bacteria can gain a foothold. Your kitchen should be cleaned daily, but if it’s in need of an in-depth cleaning, here’s how you go about it. Begin by emptying your pantry or food storage area, throwing away expired food and sorting or donating what’s still good. Wipe your cupboards out and replace shelf paper, if applicable. Do the same for drawers, and wipe down your countertops (even behind the toaster, coffeepot and microwave).

Empty your refrigerator, getting rid of expired food. Clean its interior with soapy, warm water and allow to dry before food is replaced. Seals should be wiped as well; don’t use bleach which can weaken them. Clean the refrigerator’s coils using an attachment on your vacuum cleaner, and if you can, sweep behind the fridge as well.

Use a paste of water and baking soda to clean your stove and oven. Baking soda is mildly abrasive and is great for removing grease and grime; it can also be used in paste form to clean your sink. Vinegar is a great sanitizer, and it can be used in a variety of ways (run frozen vinegar cubes through your garbage disposal, or add a cup to clean your dishwasher).

The Bedroom

Your bedroom is where you go to relax at the end of a long day, and as such, it should be one of the first areas to receive a spring cleaning. Start with your bed, removing pillows, blankets and sheets. Wash pillows and dry on low heat, adding a tennis ball to the dryer to keep them fluffy. While the pillows are drying, wash your sheets and flip your mattress. Move the bed out from the wall, cleaning debris and wiping baseboards. Vacuum the area, and put the bed back into place.

Remove curtains, launder them, and clean windowsills with diluted bleach or a multipurpose cleaner. If you have blinds, use a vacuum attachment or a duster. Dust your furniture and ceiling fan, and then vacuum the floor. Once your curtains are dry, re-hang them.

Bathroom

Your bathroom is one of the dirtiest areas in your home, and because they’re often enclosed, bacteria find their way in. If there’s a window, open it to allow fresh air to get in, or turn on the vent fan. Remove everything from the countertops and clean with a soft cloth and a disinfectant. Wipe out the sink as well, and clean mirrors with vinegar. Scrub your bathtub and toilet with cleanser, and apply disinfectant generously to the toilet’s outside.

Now is a good time to go through your medicine cabinets and drawers, removing anything that’s unneeded or expired. Wipe them thoroughly before replacing items, and finish the room by mopping the floor with a sanitizer.

The Living Room

For most of us, the living room is the most-used areas in the entire house. As such, it’s full of furniture and electronics that need cleaning. Start by cleaning your drapes and throw rugs; dust tables and picture frames with a microfiber rag. Go through all your books, games, and DVDs, donating or putting in self storage what you don’t want. Wipe baseboards with a gentle cleaner, and use a telescoping duster to clean any ceiling fans. Vacuum around and under furniture, and return everything to its proper place.
