Introduction to Shipping

While you can use shipping containers for storage or to construct models, their primary use was to transport cargo along ocean liners. Shipping Containers are constructed out of sturdy steel and come in 10 foot, 20 foot, and 40 foot long varieties. Most are eight feet wide, and these new shipping containers must meet International Shipping regulations (ISO) before it is allowed to transport cargo.

Most people consider the 20′ Steel Container for Sale the most. This is because you can pack a variety of items or interlock your boxes on top of each other or side-by-side, almost like Lego blocks. This helps them fit into a cargo ship more effectively.

Interesting Facts about Shipping

Shipping has become the largest source of revenue as in the United Kingdom, they have more shipping accounts than restaurants and other types of accounts. The shipping business now represents around 33 percent of the world trade, equaling more than $4.6 trillion dollars. It’s also stayed profitable because shipping by ocean vessels and cargo ships uses less greenhouse gases than transporting freight by truck or planes. Shipping has become a popular business, though most of us do not know much about it.

The First Shipping Container

In 1956, an American Malcolm McLean invented the first shipping container. McLean had worked as a trucker for 20 years and saw how slow and ineffective the old wooden crates were for loading and transporting cargo so he bought a shipping company and experimented until he designed a super durable shipping container. The International Maritime Hall of Fame awarded McLean the title of Man of the Century.

The Military Perfected It

By the 1970s, the US Navy had perfected the concept and had the standards approved by the ISO in 1961 so that shipping containers could be used everywhere in the world.

Shipping is Cheaper

In the1950s, it cost $5.86 for every ton of loose cargo. Using the newly approved shipping containers, freight prices dropped to a mere $.16 a ton.

About Individual Shipping Containers

Each shipping container is given its personalized unit number or box number that chip captains or crew members use to identify the container. It tells them who owns it, who is shipping what goods, and even track where the box is at any part of the journey.

Shipping Statistics

Currently, there are over 600 million shipping containers in the entire world. Around 10 thousand are being transported via ocean vessels, trains, and trucks. Shippers make over 200 million trips a year. However around 95 % of our world’s cargo and freight travels by container ships. Even though FedEx trucks and other companies may deliver items faster, they cost significantly more, so most cargo is still shipped by cargo ships.

All about Container Ships

The largest container ship, the Emma Maersk, was built in 2006, and she measures 1302 feet. As of 2010, Emma and her other sister ships still remain the largest container ships. She can carry up to 15,200 20 foot containers.

A container ship can travel vast amounts. In fact, the ship can cover three-quarters of the journey to the moon and back in one year.

Unfortunately, around 10,000 shipping containers fall off cargo ships each year and are lost at sea. This becomes dangerous because the containers don’t always sink, but sometimes just float near the bottom of the water. In 1992, a 40 foot shipping container full of children’s bath toys capsized into the Pacific Ocean and floated for 10 months until it started to drift towards the Alaskan coastline.

Do You Need New Shipping Containers?

Now that you know all about shipping containers, do you have something you need stored or shipped? If so, check out the brand new and used shipping containers at PortContainerServices.com.au. Before I opened my own moving supplies company, I always bought my new shipping containers there as the prices were reasonable.

Often, the simplest things have the greatest impact; the lever, the wheel, the plough. Every era has its great innovation, its technological revolution, and it’s usually characterized by a very small change in the way we approach a particular problem that then grows into a whole new mode of operation. The invention of the standardized shipping container was one such innovation.

Pre-1950, before the commercial shipping industry caught on to the novel idea of metal shipping containers conceived by the US military during World War II, industry reports estimated that as much as 60 – 75 per cent of the cost of shipping was incurred portside. The labour, time, loss, damage and theft involved in the loading and unloading through what is known as ‘breakbulk shipping’ so prohibitive, and carries so many disadvantages, that international trade made up a lesser part of the US economy in 1960 than it did in 1930. It was generally accepted that the time it took to load and unload a cargo ship was equivalent to the time it took for that ship to make its actual voyage.

By Michael Allen Smith under CC BY-SA 2.0

The Intermodal Shipping Container

Double handling is a major restriction on trade. Break bulk shipping entailed the loading and unloading of cargo that came in everything from boxes to blankets, in all different sizes. Once it reached port, it then had to be unloaded, and re-loaded onto trains or trucks on its way to a final destination. Ultimately, it was a former trucking tycoon that recognized the problem and, in partnership with an engineer, devised a solution.

That tycoon was Malcolm McLean. In 1955, inspired by the US military’s large metal shipping containers, he and engineer Keith Tantlinger developed a container that would come in a standardized size and be designed in such a way that it could easily be moved between different modes of transport – principally rail and road transport.

This innovation not only allowed for speedy loading portside, but meant that cargo could be transported from the point of manufacture to the point of delivery without unloading and re-loading. It minimized the risk of loss, damage and theft, and its reduction in transportation time was significant. It revolutionized not only the shipping industry, but also had a direct and significant impact on the global economy.

In throwing open the doors of international trade, investment opportunities as well as immediate profit trickled down from tycoons such as McLean and the Matson Navigation Company and allowed everyone from railroad operators to truck drivers and store owners to generate more efficient, cost-effective business. Used ocean shipping containers became a lifeline for fledgling shipping providers, and today there are whole companies that are founded on used shipping containers for sale. From the simple idea of a standardized box, I took the simple idea of used shipping containers and have succeeded in opening the doors of trade even wider.

By Derell Licht under CC BY-SA 2.0

The Impact of Standardization

A few short years after the intermodal shipping container revolution began, organizations like the International Maritime Organization, the Inter-governmental Maritime Consultative Organization and the European Commission itself began to publish industry guidelines for standardization of sizes and operation. They realized that what they were seeing was not an option, not some alternative means of transport, but a revolution that had already begun to dominate the industry. Intermodalism began to define the industry, and shape the era.

While there are several predominant types of containers, with variations such as the Australian RACE container and the Euro-Pallet container, both of which are slightly wider to accommodate their respective pallet sizes, the fixtures and mountings are uniform. This means that containers from all over the world will stack and sit side-by-side with only marginal overhang. Further, requirements such as a CSC Safety Approval plate, and the warranties that come with used cargo containers for sale, mean that consumers have a reliable idea of the durability of used shipping containers.

Essentially, and fundamentally, these boxes are built to last and to weather the open seas. Corrugated weathering steel, incredibly robust twist-lock fasteners and today’s security measures mean that companies who offer these used shipping containers for sale can only do so if they are in good condition. The market for used shipping containers is large, catering not only shipping but also storage providers and even architects.

Imports and exports now make up 30 per cent of the US economy, with exports alone generating over $2 trillion a couple of years ago.

The Future of Container Shipping

The industry changed rapidly as a result of container shipping, and while relatively uniform sizes come with absolutely uniform fittings, a variety of containers exists for the transport of different kinds of cargo. Aside from the Euro-Pallet and RACE varieties, there are also variations such as the taller hi-cube containers for voluminous but light cargo, and insulated, refrigerated and general dry containers. “One size”, or at least one standard mounting system, may fit all, but that doesn’t mean that freight storage is limited to a particular cargo.

Within the revolution itself, innovations occur all the time. Standards have improved to such a degree that used containers offer as much in terms of quality, protection and efficiency of labour and time as new containers. Lifespans increase to compound and enhance their inherent efficiency, and the future of shipping containers is one that looks set to keep growing as more and people discover their uses.

Going to a convention or trade show can be fun, but more often than not, moving around the city where the event is being held can be a problem. Whether you’re traveling alone or with a small or large group, you have to make sure that you have transportation. For those who are flying to Chicago to attend either a trade show or a convention or even a personal matter like a wedding of a relative or a friend, it is a hassle to not have transportation to get to one part of the city to another.

Travel Ideas For Small Groups

Moving around a city you aren’t familiar with is easier if you have transportation. Since you will have a busy schedule, getting the right kind of transport is a must. After all, it would be difficult to do a bit of sightseeing just by hailing a cab. The following are a few transportation choices while in Chicago:

Stretch Limo

Typing limo Chicago in our favorite search engine will result to a number of limousine services in the windy city. Whether you’re travelling alone or with a small group, renting a limousine is one of the most comfortable, if not the most comfortable, way of exploring the city.

Limousines offer great comfort for its passengers, much like the ones you see on television, they are equipped with an entertainment system while some of them even have built-in bars.

The good thing about renting a limousine is you’d be travelling in style, and you’d have a chauffeur to drive you around town.

Van

If you’re on a budget and just need transportation that will get you from one place to another, then renting a van is a great idea. You would need to drive it yourself of course or let one of the individuals in your group drive.

Car

If there are only four of you and you are willing to drive, renting a car in Chicago is a fine idea.

By Wacek (Own work) [GFDL or CC-BY-3.0], via Wikimedia Commons

Transportation for Large Groups

Travelling with a large group can be problematic especially when it comes to transportation. If you want to travel together to and from your convention or a trade show, you would be needing a vehicle that can accommodate all of you.

Bus

Renting a bus is a good idea. Aside from the fact that it can accommodate a lot of people, it is a good choice for those on a budget. Buses usually come with drivers so this makes renting a bus a viable choice because you won’t have to keep checking your map while driving.

Limo Bus

If you want ultimate comfort, renting a limo bus for you and your group is the best choice. Limo buses are spacious and offers a lot of leg room for its passengers. They are also equipped with nice cushioned seats that will make travelling from one location to the next a more enjoyable activity.

Riding a limo bus is like being in a friend’s house or in your own house where you can just lay on the couch or even sleep.

Cheap plane tickets have been offered by numerous airlines for probably decades. Unlike the early fifties when air travel was difficult, and often expensive today airlines, and airplanes are the preferred mode of travel and because of that they are a dime a dozen. Today there are possibly close to a hundred international airliners and many more domestic airliners which serve great food and also offer big discounts. The difficult part about finding cheap tickets is getting through to these airlines. You can search the internet all you like but if you cannot come across something which is really good then your chances of actually saving money are little to none. You also need to know a bit about what you are looking for or it is just a waste of time.

Big versus Small airlines

Airline companies can be broken down to two wide categories the first being big airliners which have usually been around for decades and have an international presence and then there are smaller airlines which have just come up a few years ago and have a local presence in a few cities at best. The airline you chose will mainly depend on where you are travelling to. If you are travelling to a foreign destination (outside your home country) then you will obviously have to put up with a big airliner but a big airliner does not mean expensive tickets. Many people have found that some big airliners actually offer much cheaper airline tickets. The reason why they can offer cheap plane tickets is because they have a larger fleet and they have larger airplanes than domestic ones. People can also save additional money by purchasing a connecting flight ticket as opposed to a direct flight one.

Small airliners are great if you are travelling domestically. A big airliner is almost always going to be expensive for domestic flights and so this is why you will want to do business with a domestic airliner or a small one. Many times you can just get cheap plane tickets if you called up the airliner and asked them for a discount and this is possible because most people do not use this technique. If you are making a bulk purchase or you intend to make one then you should let the airline know of your intentions so that they can offer you cheap plane tickets.

Many airlines today make it clear to their prospective flyers as to what their policies are as far as discounts are concerned. You can always signup to their newsletter which should keep you abreast of the latest developments with these airliners which in turn may also help you find cheap plane tickets. However, just following the methods discussed above should suffice when it comes to finding and using cheap plane tickets. If you still find it difficult the best thing is to wait a while and search a month or so later when many people are choosing not to travel.

Did You Know How Important CNG Vehicles Are?

CNG is produced by compressing natural gas. The abbreviation CNG stands for compressed or condensed natural gas. CNG is mainly used in the transport industry. The low density of CNG allows compression to take place at around 200 kilograms, hence, increasing the on-board capacity or storage space of a CNG car. Besides this, CNG vehicles have a range of other benefits, which is why many people prefer to convert their cars into CNG vehicles.

The main benefit of CNG is its environment-friendliness, and it is often referred to as a green fuel. It is great for the environment because it does not contain elements such as lead and sulfur, which can cause environmental pollution.

CNG also helps in improving the durability of spark plugs, as it does not contain benzene and lead. Presently, industrial plants utilize large quantities of this gas as heavy fuel, since it is a more environmentally clean alternative than other fuels, and significantly reduces emissions.

Moreover, CNG also assists in increasing the life of grease oils, as it does not taint or dilute crankcase oil. Besides, as CNG is a gaseous fuel, it blends very easily and evenly with the air, hence causing less environmental problems.

Apart from this, CNG has a high ignition temperature. This means that there are few chances of the fuel accidentally getting ignited, if at all. Hence, CNG can be considered a safe fuel option, as it helps avert mishaps and the loss of lives.

Another great advantage that one would be able to avail if one goes for CNG is its low cost. The cost of running automobiles with CNG is quite low, compared to the cost of running them on other types of fuel, like diesel and petrol.

As CNG has many features that make it a good fuel, it is recommended that one buy vehicles that run on CNG. If one is planning to convert one’s car, then one can consider changing to this gas, as it helps in reducing environmental pollution.

Demerits

CNG-based cars do not have a very long range compared to petrol-based cars, because of their condensed trunk where the natural gas container is placed. This increases the weight of the car, which reduces its range. In addition, the tank is constructed from heavy steel to endure force, which also makes the car heavy. In the future, it may be possible for natural gas tanks to be manufactured from multiple materials, which are sturdy but light; however, these tanks might be very costly. In addition, handling of natural gas at the gas station may not be very user-friendly. The pour is slower than gasoline, and one has to ensure that the link is leak proof. However, despite these demerits, it can be said that CNG is the future of fuel because of its various advantages, with its environment friendliness being the main one.Other than CNG, there are other alternatives available in the market, which one can also consider choosing. One of these options is LPG. Though, the cost of LPG conversion is pretty high, one can save a lot of money each year, after it is completed.

Additionally, LPG automobiles run for a longer period of time, than cars running on diesel or petrol. This is because natural gas smolders in a way that is suitable for the engine, thus guaranteeing it a long life. There are different types of conversion kits available in the market, which one can buy and fix on their own, if one wants to change the fuel system of one’s car.
