Planning a visit to New Jersey any time soon? Instead of visiting the usual tourist destinations, why not add a little spook and spice to your trip by visiting some of the most haunted destinations in New Jersey:

Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Parsippany

This building opened its doors in 1876 and was known as the New Jersey Lunatic Asylum. The building is 675,000 square feet and rests on more than 1,000 acres of ground. The asylum was built to house a few hundred patients, but eventually became home to over 7,000. One of its most famous patients was Woody Guthrie, who stayed year during the 1950s when he was afflicted by Huntington’s disease. Today, this magnificent building, built in the French Renaissance style, remains unused and uninhabited except by the ghosts and spirits that once walked its grounds!

Pine Barrens

This is a beautiful area is also mysterious and spooky as it filled with dark woods, endless trails that lead o nowhere, and overwhelming silence that has given rise to stories about goblins, ghosts and devils. People who have lost their way in the Pine Barrens have reported losing their cell phone coverage or their batteries mysteriously drained out. Those who have camped in the Barrens at night, reported hearing strange noises which resembled trucks rumbling, except there are no trucks in the woods!

The Devil’s Tree in Bernards

According to local legend, a famer murdered his wife and children and then went on to hang himself from a tree. According to local stories, whoever attempts to chop down this tree meets his or her untimely end. It seems that many have tried to do so but the tree mysteriously recovers without any axe marks.

Ginny’s Gin House in Pleasant

Today it is a restaurant, but in the past Ginny’s Gin House was a stagecoach shop, brothel and hotel that is filled with ghosts and phantoms. Many have reported faucets running on their own and toilets flushing. Sometimes even the vacuum turns on by itself! Apparently, the ghosts here are domestically inclined!

Red Mill in Clinton

This 175-year old mill was used for basket-making, wheat and grist. There are many reports of various ethereal phenomena such as a gong going off or an old typewriter click clacking away when it is actually put away in storage! In the 90s, a séance was conducted at the site. The medium in the séance reported seeing a child who was injured at the mill.

House in South Branch

This is a 3-storey Victorian home with many strange occurrences. According to historical records, a family was once murdered next door and the house was later torn down. Since then, many unusual events have been reported in and around the house such as the vacuum cleaner turning on and pushing itself, door handles rattling by themselves, curtains moving back forth when no one is actually in the home and the furniture moving by itself.

After talking about the most haunted places in New Jersey, we decided to make a list of the scariest places that you want to visit in New Jersey. You can visit so many creepy cemeteries, abandoned buildings, homes that are haunted and locations that have ghoulish legends associated with them all throughout the state.

Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital

This is an abandoned building located in Parsippany. Just as the name implies, we are talking about a former asylum, which was opened in the year 1876. There were hundreds of patients that were housed here, sometimes as high as 7,500 at one time. One of the really famous patients was Woody Guthrie. He suffered from the dreaded Huntington’s disease. The building is French Renaissance and although the building is scheduled for demolition, it is definitely one location that is incredibly scary.

Snake Hill

Located in Secaucus, we are talking about a location that was once a psychiatric hospital, penitentiary and almshouse, all together to a truly monstrous black rock that looms right over the Turnpike. Children in Hudson County have been scared for years by Snake Hills, a location that is said to house many snakes. In case you do not know, this is the inspiration for the world renowned The Rock.

Pine Barrens

This is a New Jersey location that is simply beautiful and that is mysterious at the same time. It is also really spooky with many dark woods, deep woods, a truly overwhelming silence and various trails that are said to lead towards doom. The location has been connected to devils, ghosts and even goblins. You will surely end up feeling scared when in the area, especially at night. Organize late night camping only if you do not scare easily.

Shades Of Death Road

Located in Warren County, this is the road that sounds scary right on when you are on it. The road is close to Hope town but hope seems to be far away when you are on this road. The name is connected with various legends. One of them says that a wildcats band killed and mutilated the residents that initially stayed in the area. While the scientific explanation that was discovered through historic documents was connected to malaria, legends still exist and are enough to scare you.

Devil’s Tree

Located in Bernards, on Mountain Road, this is a place where legend says that one farmer killed his kids and wife. After, he hanged himself from this tree. The legend claims that if you cut the tree, you die. It seems that there are many people that tried to cut the tree and eventually died. You can actually see many ax marks on the Devil’s Tree. Those marks are enough to send thrills on your back. If you do visit Warren County, make sure that you also consider visiting Camp Pahaquarry as it is also really scary.
