Spirituality is an individual journey that can be guided by many factors. Meditation at a Buddhist temple, attending Seders with Jewish friends or attending Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve are just some of the experiences you could find yourself engaging with on your path to enlightenment.

Religion and spirituality should never be separated. Here’s why:

Definition

Spirituality is an individual’s internal journey of seeking meaning, purpose, and connection with something greater than themselves. People seeking spirituality may adhere to various religious traditions or even call themselves spiritual without considering themselves religious; some people may call themselves spiritual without necessarily considering themselves religious at all.

Religions are complex bodies of beliefs and practices that dictate rules, behaviors and rituals for their followers. Many adherents adhere to religious laws strictly, believing in some divine force that guides their world and can teach morality, philanthropy and other social/ethical values from religions.

Religions around the world often center on teachings from historical or archetypal figures like Jesus, Buddha, Moses, Krishna and Muhammad who are widely seen as gods or other highly evolved beings who serve as sources of devotion, worship and service in their religion.

Religion and spirituality differ significantly in that spirituality does not place the same emphasis on faith as religions do. While religions may encourage their followers to have faith in what they learn, spirituality typically relies on experiencing soul or divinity directly through meditation, yoga, silence and other forms of contemplation.

Religions tend to promote fear of punishment in the afterlife as a major motivating factor for their followers, so as to maintain strict obedience with strict rules for fear of punishment or being sent to hell. Spirituality however tends to promote more positive lifestyle choices without encouraging such fears in its teachings.

Though it is possible for an individual to be both religious and spiritual at once, most tend to fall into one category or the other. Religion without spirituality becomes nothing more than an abstract set of dogmatic beliefs void of emotion; while spirituality without religion often results in self-centered complacency that lacks connections to any community.

Motivations

Religious and spiritual beliefs are driven by various motivations, including attachment to a higher power, seeking meaning and purpose in life, and looking for transcendence. Additionally, people may use religion as an outlet to cope with life events such as illness, death, loss of close relationships and genocide; prayer being one such method believed to help individuals find inner peace while connecting to God.

Spirituality can vary widely from one individual to the next and should remain private and personal. Spirituality might include connecting with nature, practicing breathwork methods or meditating in unusual physical positions; but not all forms of spirituality are equal; it is essential to distinguish true and false spiritualities – true spirituality involves connecting to your authentic Self while developing qualities like love, joy, peace, patience kindness goodness faith and gentleness – true spirituality is essential in being truly happy and content with oneself and its goals.

Spiritual people tend to follow what they feel is right without worrying about punishment or reward, adhering to the principle of karma – that one’s actions have an immediate and direct effect on one’s future – as a guideline for their conduct. Spirituality also often promotes acts of forgiveness and helping others.

Religious beliefs tend to be well documented and shared among followers, usually via scriptures, teachings or experiences of their founders. Additionally, religion often promotes morality as it teaches followers how to obey laws, respect other humans and refrain from harming anyone – however this doesn’t prevent religion-inspired atrocities such as Holocausts, Crusades or September 11 attacks from occurring despite good intentions from followers.

Many factors can contribute to one’s spirituality and religiosity, from biological makeup and life circumstances, to external influences like parents, friends, teachers and medication which affect neurotransmitters that could alter one’s brain chemistry and increase or decrease their religiosity and spirituality. Some individuals tend to be naturally more religious while others require meaning in their lives – some will naturally lean more religious while some require greater meaning from life than others. Furthermore, the development of someone’s religiosity and spirituality can be affected by factors like biological makeup and life circumstances while external factors like medications that alter one’s brain chemicals which influence one’s religiosity or spirituality – thus increasing or decreasing one’s religiosity or spirituality.

Punishment

Spirituality should not be confused with religion; anyone can be spiritual without adhering to any particular belief system. Religious doctrine is dictated by established authorities while spirituality draws on one’s experience and study of spiritual phenomena, encouraging individuals to follow their intuition rather than following what other people dictate them to do – thus leading a happier, fulfilling life.

Religions often promote the concept of an ultimate power with punishments and rewards for human actions, such as eating the wrong foods or killing animals, which might then get punished by gods. While such beliefs may help cope with stress and depression, they can also make people feel guilty for things they didn’t do or cause torture and death as punishments from gods.

Punishment’s primary function is to restore order following crimes committed, whether through physical or psychological means. But excessive violence and fear-based approaches to punishment often do more harm than good; consequently, experts have suggested replacing punishments with alternative measures such as community service or rehabilitation programs.

Spirituality focuses on spiritual experience and emphasizing love and forgiveness, while religion often overlaps. While they may appear similar at first glance, it’s essential that you understand their differences so you can choose which concept best meets your needs.

According to a recent survey, respondents who identify as both religious and spiritual are more likely to support certain spiritual concepts tested than those who describe themselves as neither religious nor spiritual. A majority of both religious and spiritual respondents believe there is an afterlife or soul; Europeans who describe themselves neither religious nor spiritual often reject any concept of a higher power or spirit.

Reward

Religions often offer reward systems with promises ranging from worldly wealth to eternal peace after death. These rewards create positive feelings among followers that must be fed with more beliefs. Over time, this can become addictive and lead to feelings of discontentment if their actions stop supporting it.

Spirituality doesn’t offer its followers immediate material rewards, instead relying on meditation and breathwork methods to connect to the universe individually and find fulfillment within themselves. Astrology may also help these followers connect to themselves more fully.

Another key distinction between religious and spiritual beliefs is their rigid nature; while spiritual practices such as yoga may adhere to some strict protocols, ultimately it’s up to each person as to their level of dedication – there are no pre-established right or wrongs when it comes to spirituality – thus changing beliefs over time can happen freely and unpredictably.

Spiritual people can often combine beliefs from multiple religions into their own belief system. For instance, some may believe in the concept of karma where everything you put out into the world will come back around to you; others embrace an idea that each individual serves a specific purpose within humanity’s overall plan.

People who identify as spiritual tend to be open-minded and accepting of new ideas. This can be beneficial because it protects them from being persuaded by propaganda or false information that could alter their beliefs; it also keeps them away from joining dangerous cults that recruit members for various purposes including money, power or joining an argument against other religious faiths.

Strong spiritual values can bring many advantages, especially when it comes to prioritising the needs of those around you. Unfortunately, having these can also sometimes make one’s own feelings and happiness seem inconsequential.

Muslim beliefs include an understanding that their free will is part of an overall Divine plan known as Qadar, which they strive to fulfill by performing actions which uphold it; acting ethically while eschewing bad character traits and possessing positive values and qualities.

1. Keep up with your devotional practices

Many Muslims find it challenging to resume practicing religious activities once they stop doing them, so forming good habits early will ensure you continue with devotional practices throughout your life.

One way is through family prayer time, which provides the perfect opportunity to discuss Islam with your children and what it means to them. Additionally, reading the Quran together is another effective way of helping your kids understand its suras’ meaning while also teaching tajweed faster; you could even enroll them in online tajweed classes for further assistance.

Telling your children stories about Muslim heroes will also inspire them to emulate Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Furthermore, teach your kids about Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala), his love and appreciation for them – which should serve as both source of comfort and fear in equal measures.

Warn them of Satan’s tricks (Shaytan). This will help protect them from falling into sinful behavior or transgressing against the law.

2. Be sociable

Many Muslims who have recently immigrated to the West are finding it challenging to adjust. Offering English tutoring or teaching services, offering transportation such as shopping or doctor appointments, showing hospitality and welcoming them into your home are great ways of showing love to those who might otherwise feel isolated from their community.

Children need to learn about and experience people from cultures different than their own; it helps them appreciate diversity as an asset. Teaching your kids about Muslim heroes such as Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah bless him) and other individuals who made positive strides toward peace is also helpful.

Children need to know they’re loved, so make sure that this message gets across frequently. Encourage them to write letters or draw pictures for those less fortunate in order to give them a sense of community and belonging. Befriend Muslim children; speak about interests while learning more about culture and traditions – just make sure that this doesn’t turn into too close of a friendship that compromises your parent-child role!

3. Don’t be afraid to go to the mosque

No matter your background or belief system, visiting a mosque can have a powerful spiritual effect. If attending in person is too uncomfortable for you, consider calling to schedule an appointment instead – many mosques request visitors call ahead before visiting, especially following major events like New Zealand shootings to ensure safety.

As part of your visits, try engaging with local Muslims. Saying, “As-salamu ‘Alaykum” (Peace be upon you) can be an excellent way to start conversations with strangers; alternatively you could ask about how they practice Islam or ask questions related to its practice.

Mosques often host programs tailored specifically for youth and women’s groups, which are helpful in building community among Muslims in your community and creating lasting friendships.

Visit mosques and listen to lectures by prominent Muslims to gain a deeper insight into Islam. By understanding Arabic language you’ll also develop an ability to read Quran. Besides these events there will also be lectures or discussions covering topics ranging from theology, history and social justice which you might find informative and educational.

4. Say “As-salamu ’Alaykum”

As-salamu ‘Alaykum is a common greeting among Muslims, yet can also be said by anyone to show respect and kindness. The phrase translates into English as “Peace be upon you”, providing an excellent way of showing that you care for another individual while also showing your interest in Islam’s teachings.

Muhammad taught his followers to greet people politely and return their greetings, which remains an essential tenant of Islam. It can even be found in both Quran and Hadith (Islam’s holy books) where it appears. For instance, Adam greets angels at his creation with “As-salamu alaykum”, meaning Peace be upon you in Arabic.

Greeting people with this expression can be an excellent way to strengthen your relationship with Allah and other believers, as well as furthering it with non-Muslims by showing that you respect them. No matter who it is that you’re greeting, always say: As-salamu ‘Alaykum; however if desired you could also say Wa alaikum as-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatoohu for more formal greetings.

5. Be a light to your non-Muslim friends

Spiritual health of Muslims affects not only themselves but those around them too, such as family and coworkers. If a woman doesn’t pray regularly she affects both herself and those closest to her such as children and husband. If men stop going to mosque it impacts not only themselves but their family and coworkers as well. Therefore the best way to influence others positively is through acting as role models.

Although this may be difficult, try your best to be kind and considerate toward non-Muslim friends. Teach them about Islam by showing your practice and teaching them more – this may take time, but its rewards are immeasurable!

Particularly in Western settings, it can be challenging to discuss religion and spirituality openly with non-Muslims. Thankfully, however, this is not usually an issue within many Muslim cultures.

As opposed to discussing points of difference, it is essential that Muslims and Christians discuss what beliefs they share. Sharing stories from the Bible that relate to prophets often resonates well with Muslims.

There is also the famous verse: 56 Allah does not prohibit you from maintaining friendship with those who do not believe, in fact He loves those who do so.” However, this does not imply that we need to become friends with non-Muslims in order to help gain their salvation.

6. Be patient with yourself

An impatient Muslim’s behaviour will impact all aspects of her life; family, friends, colleagues and community members will feel its impact; her spiritual health too will suffer as it becomes essential for akhirah (heaven).

Practice patience with yourself may initially seem challenging. A great way to do so is through journaling nonjudgmentally about it, which will allow you to become aware of any harsh, intolerant inner voices that create impatience and eventually replace them with positive ones.

Establish situations designed to challenge your patience (like waiting in long grocery store lines). By intentionally placing yourself in these challenging scenarios, you can practice remaining calm and patient – over time your “patience bandwidth” will grow significantly.

Keep in mind that your personal best will vary throughout your life, depending on where you’re at in life. Consistency of effort over reaching an ideal state should be your goal; just like when running a marathon, start slowly and gradually increase pace over time for maximum safety and success in reaching your goal successfully.

7. Never despair

As Muslims, we are required to benefit humanity and combat injustice. Unfortunately, this work can often be extremely challenging and we may feel discouraged; but remembering Allah’s assistance close at hand should keep you going despite any difficulties you encounter along the way. That is why Muhammad encouraged his Companions not to despair during their efforts to reform society by leading people away from ignorance, polytheism, sin and heresy and towards light of guidance, knowledge and wisdom – promising them victory against Chosroes’ Persian Empire and Caesar’s Roman Dominion forces!

Once you realize you’ve committed an act of sin, take time to repent by performing acts such as making wudoo, praying two rak’ahs of prayer, making istighfar, reading Quran verses from Surah Al-Imran or making Istighfar. Doing these things will bring closer your relationship with Allah and help restore your soul.

Remember, Allah SWT never leaves His believers to themselves – He is constantly watching over and looking out for your affairs. He promises his believers that hardship will bring relief; be patient and trust Allah – it’s something you should feel proud about being part of Islam and on the path towards Jannah!

Believers in the Bible understand that Satan is an evil force working to oppose God. He also attempts to deceive people into thinking he created the universe.

The Church of Satan is an American cult founded in 1966 by chat show celebrity Anton LaVey. It promotes anti-Christian moral values such as ethical egoism and animal sacrifice, all with a goal to destroy Christianity.

1. It is not a religion

Contrary to what the media often portrays, satanism is not a religion but an advocacy movement for human rights and rejecting arbitrary authority.

Satanists come in many varieties, but most adhere to Anton LaVey’s teachings on Satanism. These individuals are known as *LeVeyan Satanists* and they believe in natural forces rather than the God of the Bible.

They tend to prioritize self-gratification, pleasure and revenge over all else. Their primary mission is to live life to the fullest, while harboring a fierce hatred towards Christians.

They believe the Bible is filled with myths and lies designed to prevent people from having fun. They believe if you live life to its fullest, there’s no need to fear death or heaven.

Anton LaVey, a former circus performer who founded the Church of Satan in 1966, established its primary philosophy that man should have freedom to indulge in whatever he desires since “divine spiritual and intellectual development has made us the most vicious animal.” As LaVey put it: “Divine spiritual development has made us the most vicious animal.”

Modern day satanism has become a contentious concept due to its potential danger and promotion of ritual abuse and murder.

However, most Satanists are non-theists who view satanism as a personal liberation from traditional theistic beliefs. Additionally, they value nonconformity and rebellion against arbitrary authority.

Modern-day Satanists do not believe in the existence of a devil, rather they use his image as a metaphor for rebellion against arbitrary authority and an endeavor for truth and justice.

2. It is not a cult

When you think of satanism, images of black-clad youths wearing hardcore death metal and ritualistic invocations of demons may come to mind. But if you know what to look for, you might discover that there’s much more behind this facade.

Satanists believe in the evil power of Satan and practice rituals to tap into it for personal benefit. This could be done for pleasure or to protect themselves from negative energies from their bodies, among other reasons.

Satanism differs from traditional Christianity in that it does not revere Satan as God but instead emphasizes his vengeful nature, role as spirit guide to darkness and powers of temptation. In this respect, it shares some similarities to modern witchcraft and Neo-Paganism.

Anton LaVey, a former circus performer and founder of atheistic Satanism, launched the Church of Satan in 1966. Initially based in Los Angeles, it later relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and now has chapters across America.

Many members of this group are also actively engaged in politics, advocating for religious equality and reproductive rights. Additionally, they run addiction recovery support groups, campaigns against corporal punishment in schools, and refugee assistance outreach initiatives.

Another essential point to note is that most satanists do not believe in the devil. They use his name as a metaphor for rebellion and subversion, as well as their own personal liberation from traditional religious teachings.

Many individuals identify as Satanists, yet the vast majority are harmless and do not pose a danger to society. If you ever come into contact with one, it is best to be patient with them and treat them with respect.

3. It is not a secret society

For decades, satanism has been misunderstood and portrayed as an evil force in popular culture. It is associated with violent acts such as human sacrifice, blood drinking, witchcraft, and even child possession.

But satanism is not as evil as one might think. In fact, many modern Satanists are non-violent activists who champion human rights and freedom of expression.

Some satanic movements are atheistic, agnostic or deistic in nature and reject Christianity as a religion of oppression. Others draw from secular philosophy, occult concepts and black magic – often with influences such as Friedrich Nietzsche, H.L Mencken or Ayn Rand at their core.

Satanists tend not to believe in a god and instead view Satan as a symbolic representation. They oppose any sort of arbitrary authority and reject traditional theistic beliefs.

One reason satanism appeals to so many is its celebration of being an outsider. Canadian author Kate Freuler, who wrote a book about satanism, said she chose the movement because it allowed her to express her “outsider status.”

In contrast to other religious groups, the Satanic Temple is an organization dedicated to politics and civil rights. Additionally, it advocates separation of church and state – something common among cults.

La Carmina summarizes the mission statement of The Temple as follows: “To foster benevolence and empathy among all people, to resist tyrannical authority, to promote practical common sense and justice, and to be guided by our human conscience in undertaking noble pursuits guided by individual will. We do not accept Satan as a demon or being of evil, but his name stands as an inspiring symbol of human freedom and agency.”

4. It is not a movement

The term satanism comes from the Latin phrase Satanism, meaning “the study of evil.” In modern satanism, Satan serves more as a symbol than an actual deity or god; it stands for freedom, knowledge, fearlessness, power and pleasure.

There are various forms of satanism, some of which have grown increasingly popular over time. One such organization is The Church of Satan, founded in 1966 by Anton LaVey and now spread around the globe.

In addition to satanic worship, the Church of Satan offers religious activism. They organize campaigns related to public policy and politics such as protesting monuments on government property.

They oppose corporal punishment in schools and have even called for the removal of a Ten Commandments statue from Oklahoma’s state capitol building.

Though some of these political actions appear out-of-place for a church, they do not necessarily constitute wrongdoing. After all, these decisions stem from deeply held beliefs among group members – just like when Quakers get involved in political campaigns.

Other examples include the QAnon conspiracy movement, which claims that a secret Satanic cabal is responsible for kidnapping children by the thousands and engaging in ritualized sexual abuse. This has inspired numerous violent acts throughout America.

The Satanic Temple takes a more communal-minded approach to politics. They believe people should have the freedom to practice their religion without being subject to oppressive government policies or laws. Additionally, the temple has an enthusiastic commitment to the arts, encouraging members to incorporate art into their daily lives.

5. It is not a cult of death

Cults are religious groups characterized by devotion to an unusual cause or movement (Richardson 1994). Unfortunately, cults often carry with them a negative connotation and many people view them as dangerous.

Cults can pose a threat to society and should be monitored by authorities; however, there are also numerous Satanic groups that have never been affiliated with anything but their own beliefs. Some neo-Satanic movements have even gained religious recognition – such as the U.S.-based Church of Satan founded in 1966.

In 1966, Anton LeVay founded the Church of Satan in California to honor Satan as a symbol for anti-Christian moral values. Their use of occult powers and ritual rituals, particularly using satanic demons, gained them national notoriety.

LaVey’s 1969 publication of his Satanic Bible was instrumental in building the Church of Satan into an expansive organization. Drawing upon his personal blend of black magic, occult concepts, and secular philosophy to offer an alternative to Christianity, LaVey’s book offered readers a viable alternative.

Modern satanic movements may be agnostic or atheistic, rejecting traditional Abrahamic religions as hypocritical and repressive. Some groups also advocate extreme forms of individualism and ethical egoism.

These groups often combine inverted forms of Christianity with romantic gnostic elements. They are commonly found among adolescent gangs and are often influenced by heavy metal rock music, Christian scare propaganda, role-playing games and horror imagery.

Some satanic organizations are more mainstream than others, though their membership tends to be small. One prominent example is the Church of Satan, which has gained notoriety recently due to its attempts to have Baphomet statues legally placed on two state capitol grounds.

Is your congregation in need of an influx of money? Have you been tasked with coming up with ideas on how to make it a reality? Do you find yourself stuck and going round in circles, always ending up at the same ideas that have been used too many times? If so, here’s a look at some of the most effective ways to raise money for your congregation. Whether you pick one or use a combination of these ideas, they are bound to deliver results.

Host a Church Yard Sale

To increase the amount of money you’re able to raise for your congregation, often you need community outreach. It can’t just be about raising money within the congregation; instead, you need to think bigger. Hosting a church yard sale is a great way to accomplish this goal. The congregation will be the ones putting it together and selling the items, but the community can take part in terms of the money being raised.

To ensure the yard sale is a huge success, make sure you have a wide variety of items for sale so that it appeals to more people and ensure that you’ve properly advertised the event well in advance. Nowadays social media networks tend to be the best way to get the word out.

Virtual Events Can Open the Door to Accessibility

Speaking of reaching more people, virtual events are another way to accomplish this task. Many churches are now embracing the virtual offering plate which allows people who attend the virtual services to donate. Online services were made popular during the height of the pandemic, but have remained in place in many churches simply to improve accessibility.

Test Your Skills in the Trade Markets

While maybe a less traditional option, you can also check out the HFM MT5 platform, which is meant for those who want to improve their skills in terms of the markets. Your style of trade doesn’t matter; simply perform a platform download and check out the user-friendly platform. It includes technical indicators you can follow, an economic calendar, and the ability to view a large number of charts at once. Also, all HFM asset classes can be traded, and hedging is allowed. There is a learning curve here, but thanks to the layout, nothing is intimidating about it.

Think Big – Host a Large Community Event

If you have a large congregation then a community event could be a great option. This requires a team of people to think big in terms of the theme, the type of event, the set-up, entertainment, vendors and so forth. Some ideas can include a block party, a fair and so forth.

Don’t Be Afraid to Step Outside the Box

For your money-raising event or plan to be successful, it’s important to put on your creative thinking cap and not be afraid to step outside the box. While there is nothing wrong with the traditional fundraisers such as bake sales and auctions, these may not cut it in terms of the funds you raise for the congregation.

Even though they might be the same to some of us, there is a clear difference between religion and spirituality. There are people that choose to be atheists, but that does not necessary mean they don’t guide themselves and follow certain principles.

Before embarking on such a tremendously topic, we need to define those two terms. Religion can be defined as faith in God, in deity and most of the times it manifests through different kind of rituals; religion also involves an ethical code. Spirituality is the capacity of being spiritual, which shows through people’s character. So, religion is a set of beliefs and rituals that can bring the human in a close relation with a deity, while spirituality is a way of looking at the world.

Once you know the difference between religion and spirituality, you will be able to choose wisely, because it makes you see the world with different eyes.

First of all, let’s take a look at the religions existing on the globe. Statistics show that there are around 4200 religions on the planet. Each of them have their own system and set of rules, and most of them have institutions represented by different priests. Most likely you never heard of those religions and among them are: babism, methodism, waldensian movement, dudeism, yazidism and so on.

Each religion has its own rich culture and traditions. If you are Jewish and living abroad, I would recommend checking out Judaiwebstore. They sell crafts straight from Israel and as a Jewish, you’d love their religious products.

The first five religions in the world are spread in each corner of the world and I believe it’s a good opportunity to write something about them:

Hinduism is the religion in which the Universe is the breath of Brahman, the creator. All the Gods are nothing else but incarnations of Brahman. They believe we are trapped in this world and the only moment when we will be saved is when we free ourselves from the physical world.

The Muslim religion – Islam is the last massage to the world, and Muhammad is the last prophet and messenger of Allah. They also believe in all the prophets sent to the mankind before Muhammad. God cannot have sons and he is unique (radical monotheism).

Christianity – a monotheist religion, but the uniqueness of God includes His Son and the Holy Spirit. They believe in Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary and the followers are born with sins and they need to save themselves during this life.

Judaism – one of the biggest monotheist religions in the world, among Muslim and Christianity. Judaism begins with the bond between God and Abraham, and its principles are the Hebrew Bible and Talmud. It is the religion of the Jewish people and it has certain things in common with both Christianity and Islam.

Buddhism – the initiator was Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha). It is believed that there were many others illuminated men and there will be many others after Buddha. They search for Buddha’s reincarnation all the time among young children with special abilities. The pillars of their religion are the 4 noble truths.

Why do we have to know about this? Because in order to realize how different and separated the mankind is, we need to become conscious that on Earth are thousands of religions; each of them with thousands of adepts who believe their religion is the right path and if you don’t become a follower, you will not be able to save yourself.

Moving on the spirituality, if I were to say in just a few simple words what is the difference between spirituality and religion, I could easily say that religion means division, while spirituality means unity.

There is no definition of spirituality that is generally accepted, but there might be one that has certain things in common with all the definitions: the traditional meaning of spirituality is a process of re-formation which “aims to recover the original shape of man, the image of God. To accomplish this, the re-formation is oriented at a mold, which represents the original shape: in Judaism the Torah, in Christianity Christ, in Buddhism Buddha, in the Islam Muhammad.”

On the other hand, the sociologists say that the spirituality is a constant search of the sacred. A transcendental dimension discovered in the moments when individual questions regarding existence find an answer.

As a conclusion to the meaning of spirituality, we could say that spirituality accepts all the religions, it urges the individual human being to find own answers to own questions and it doesn’t have institutions.

If you made an overview, we can now discuss about punctual differences between spirituality and religion:

Religion is clergy. Clergy is the whole priests and institutions of certain worship. Spirituality doesn’t have clergy;

Most of the times religion is an institutions. It has buildings and its adepts meet for different activities. Spirituality isn’t an institution. Its temple is the Universe;

Religion claims to know the supreme truth. Each religion claims to be the only one who knows the truth. Spirituality accepts that there is always new unknown aspects and understands that a part of the truth can be found in religion;

Religion doesn’t accept anything new. No matter how much the science evolves, religion is still the same. Spirituality is open to the new. It tries to integrate science with religion and personal experience;

Religion can also mean division. There have been wars in the name of different religions and many people died. Spirituality is unity. It accepts that everyone can be right or wrong and it tries to bring harmony among ideas and people themselves;

There are thousands of religion and only one spirituality;

Religion urges you to obtain guidance from others, while spirituality urges you to find your own way;

Many times religion teaches you to be afraid of God. Spirituality teaches you that God loves you;

Religion is something you are born with and spirituality is something you find on your own;

Religion teaches you what to do. Spirituality suggests you to be yourself;

Remember one thing: life is beautiful because it is made by our own decisions.

Meditation as a formal discipline did originate in various religious practices. Meditation was used as spiritual exercise and this is still something that is done all around the world. For instance, in Buddhist and Hindu religions we see meditation developed up to a level of art. However, many other religions traditions did develop into meditative practices.

There are Christian meditation forms, usually those seen in monasteries, which can be seen as true meditation. Others are only loosely termed as such as they are truly contemplation forms. Instead of evoking the meditative mod we see a new atmosphere created, one in which thoughts wil be directed in a manner that is disciplined towards theological problems or alternatively towards religious events. The end of the process is normally trying to apply a religious idea that you contemplated on in your day-to-day life.

Prayer is much more often used in religious practices than meditation. The relationship between prayer and meditation is one that is elusive. We can say that profound prayer is only going to happen when you enter a meditative mood but when you simply mechanically repeat prayers to fulfil some religious obligations the meditative mood will not be necessary.

We can say that prayer is related to meditation in various ways. It is an inward state that is undertaken in quietness, usually in complete solitude. Just like in meditation, outward stimuli will be reduced and the environment created is a soothing one. Ritual phrases and words being echoed are common, just as saying prayers in candlelight setting, with incense and even bell sounds around. Eyes can be closed and the goal sometimes is to unite with a deity. However, differences between meditation and prayer instantly become visible.

Prayer will rely on a meditative mood but it is not goal-directed. People call upon the deity in the prayer and will offer thanks or praise, looking for assistance, consolidation, forgiveness or something else that they want in a relationship with that deity. Praying that is goal-oriented is highly common but it is different than meditation goal-less absorption.

Prayer can be utilized as a meditation form. Contemplative prayer is currently the only widely used Western form of meditation that is socially approved as such. In the past few years prayer is lessened in the West. What is interesting is that in some cases the prayer is structured in such a way that is similar to various meditation forms. As an example, Russian monks use what is known as Prayer Of The Heart. This is a prayer that aims to purify intellect by adopting repetition and a passive attitude, together with breathing techniques and chants. The idea with the prayer is to have the mind free from passions, images and thoughts. In this case we see Christian religious phrases used as mantras in India.

The bottom line is that meditation and prayer cannot be equated. However, they cannot be fully separated. They are 2 states that are really closely related. This is historically and in purpose or spirit. Both of these practices are connected to a familiar method that will evoke meditative mood, similar to what we see in self-hypnosis.
