There are many different books written about the emotional and cognitive lives of animals (excluding humans, of course). One that instantly stands out is “Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel”, which is written by Dr. Carl Safina, award-winning writer and scientist. According to most people this is the very best book of its kind and the truth is that it is quite hard to argue with this. This book includes many compelling stories and facts about different animals most people love.

From the moment you read the description of this book you will be intrigued. It states:

“I wanted to know what they were experiencing, and why to us they feel so compelling, and so-close. This time I allowed myself to ask them the questions that for a scientist was forbidden fruit: Who are you?”

Carl Safina gives us a landmark book that manages to offer an animal behavior intimate view that challenges the boundary between nonhuman and human animals. You will be taken to exotic and rare spots like Amboseli National park or Yellowstone National Park in order to learn about the animals residing there. Then, you will learn about some extraordinary animals featuring their anger, love, jealousy and grief. By the time the book is done you will surely be surprised to see how many similarities exist between what we see as animals and humans. It is hard not to want to re-evaluate your interaction with most animals after you read Beyond Words.

One example of a really interesting thing you will find is an experiment that was observed with dogs. It was shown through that experiment that the dog that is faced with lying humans sometimes refuse to do an action simply because they realize the fact that something is wrong, that the human is trying to trick them. Some of the experiments that the humans create in order to answer some questions related to animal cognitive capacities will never be able to answer everything in a correct way. It is much better to observe.

The hard truth, which is also highlighted in this book, is that even humans have problem to understand human needs. They cannot properly predict the actions of other people. Humans tend to assume that animals do not have consciousness but that is definitely incorrect. When you analyze your animals you quickly manage to figure out the fact that this helps you to better understand yourself.

Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel is a book that is highly recommended, one that any animal lover is going to truly appreciate. This is why it reached such a huge global audience. So many different topics and animals are covered and the references that are presented are quite impressive. This is a gem book. You are going to surely appreciate information about animal moral, emotional and cognitive life. Proof is presented, which is not something we often see as we look at similar books. Go through the book and you are definitely going to recommend it to others.

When referring to personal success books of the twentieth century, “Think And Grow Rich” was the one that was the most circulated. Some believe that it is highly deceptive while others will tell you that the book helped them to improve at a personal level. As with any such books, it is obvious that everything depends on how you interpret everything. For some people is definitely a great book but you need to look over the first perception.

Should You Buy “Think And Grow Rich”?

The truth is that the actual value of this book is directly connected to you as a reader. Your current beliefs will influence what the book teaches you. In the event that you currently want to find something that will help you to get rich as soon as possible, it is what you will find. If you want to see how you can get over a really tough moment in your life, you will find that. In the event you want to find more confidence so that you can make a professional leap, you will find that.

The huge problem is that what Napoleon Hill talks about is an amplification of the values and beliefs that you already have. That is why this book is basically anything you want it to be. The one main thing that this book teaches you is how to develop your confidence. In most situations people have problems during their life because of the fact that they lack confidence so you can benefit from reading “Think And Grow Rich”.

What is really worth mentioning is that this is a book that will not tell you that you have to just think about something hard in order to make stuff happen. Napoleon Hill keeps taking you through the necessity to be confident. He tells you to keep your eyes on the prize without considering what the dream may be.

We can say that the main idea behind this book is one that we should always remember: self-confidence and being driven will be a huge part of your success. However, they are just some pieces of a puzzle that is a whole lot larger.

To sup up, in the event that your main life challenges are based on feeling you can achieve the dreams you have but there is a lack of focus, you need to read the book. In the event you were always really confident and you still cannot succeed, it is important to look for the answers to the life problems you have somewhere else. As a simple example, if you have time management problems and you cannot seem to find the necessary time to do something, you will not find something in this book that will help you out.

Nowadays there are so many books that talk about these things. The same ideas were rewritten many times but we have to admit that Napoleon Hill does a really good job with “Think And Grow Rich”. However, once again, everything is based on your current state of mind and your current confidence levels.

When it comes to motivational books, it is obvious that everything is highly subjective. There are literally thousands of such books and many of them are very interesting. Even those that you may not agree with include some ideas that you will love. Let us take a look at the best motivational books according to what we believe. You may feel different and we want to hear from you. Tell us if there is a book you believe we should have included. So head on to your library and find these books if you did not read them!

The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People

Steven Corvey does have moments when he is too preachy but the road map offered for living is very interesting. It aids you to develop a better lifestyle with better habits and convinces you that when you get them, you will become a much better person.

Think And Grow Rich

Napoleon Hill put together this book after interviewing 40 millionaires so that he can discover what is common in their thought processes or behaviors. The reason was to see why they are successful. Based on the interviews he studied the best revolutionary practices for those that many thought achieved their wealth through luck and greed. The idea was dismissed and the motivational book shows you that you too can become rich if you have the right mindset.

As A Man Thinketh

Most motivational books will tell you to act immediately. This one by James Allen was written in 1902 and does not tell you to do that. We can say that it is better thought. The book will tell you how the thoughts mold personality and how your personality will lead towards taking action. We basically have an interesting approach that teaches you how to create a proper way of thinking so that you can actually be successful in life.

Drive

Drive is written by Daniel H. Pink, who says that motivation does not come from using specific tools and methods, as other authors would want us to believe. Pink teaches us that motivation often comes from so many sources that it is really hard to identify them all. At a high performance level, motivation is linked to a really deep and profound sense of individuality and drive comes from what you really want to be, which is one thing many do not actually know. Drive teaches us about intrinsic motivation and how it is essentials to gain creativity.

The Power Of Positive Thinking

Theologians and psychologists instantly attacked Norman Vincent Peale’s The Power Of Positive Thinking as it appeared. It was considered heretical. The author was accused of being a scam. Nowadays things are different as scientific studies highlighted the basic concept inside the book as being 100% correct: a positive, optimistic attitude can make you live happier and healthier. When you are healthy and happy, there is a much higher possibility of being successful in life.

Once again, tell us what motivational book you see as the best or share with us the best one that you ever read. Readers will be happy to hear from your experience.

Louise L. Hay was recently mentioned as “the closest thing to a living saint” in Australian media and she is really well known as a motivational author and as one of the self-help movement founders. She was born on October 8th, 1926 and wrote dozens of highly successful self-help books. The one that she is mostly known for is “You Can Heal Your Life”, launched in 1984.

Biography – Personal Life

Just as with most successful self-help writers out there, Hay’s success comes from a violent childhood. When she was just 5 she admitted to having been raped by one of her neighbors. Also, her mother was poor and remarried to a violent stepfather.

When Louise Hay was 15, she dropped out of school and did not get her diploma as she was pregnant. Exactly on her 16th birthday she gave the baby girl up for adoption and moved to Chicago, making her living through low paying jobs. By the time she reached 1950, she was living in New York. Louise also changed her name and started to look for a career as a model. Success was achieved as she managed to work for big names in the industry like Pauline Trigere and Bill Blass.

In 1954 Louise married Andrew Hay, a highly successful English businessman. However, this did not go too well for her since after fourteen years of marriage, Andrew left her to follow another woman.

The Foundation Of Her Motivational Work

After those 14 years of marriage, Hay was devastated. However, this is where she found the 48th Street First Church Of Religious Science. Based on the work of Florence Scovel Shinn, she started studying New Thought. She was also highly influenced by Ernest Holmes, Religious Science founder.

In the early seventies we saw Louise as a practitioner of Religious Science. She thus took part in spoken affirmations and eventually became really popular as workshop leader. Hay continued her studies in order to learn as much as possible about meditation, self-help and spirituality.

Cancer

Around 1978 she was hit hard by life with a cervical cancer diagnosis. She believes now that because she held on to resentment for the childhood rape and abuse, she actually contributed to the onset of the condition. Conventional medical treatment was reduced and she followed a regime based on therapy, forgiveness, reflexology, occasional enemas and nutrition. While no doctor can confirm this story as they all passed away, this is the claim that she made.

Screenshot of Louise’s Website: louisehay.com

Books

The first book written by Louise Hay was “Heal Your Body” and it appeared in 1976. It was basically a small pamphlet that contained various bodily ailments. The pamphlet was eventually extended and enlarged. The new version was the highly successful “You Can Heal Your Life”, which was published in the year 1984. In February 2008 the book was ranked second on the New York Times best-sellers list under miscellaneous paperback category.

Hay Rides

Hay Rides was the name that Louise gave to the support groups she created in order to help people that were living with AIDS or H.I.V. Just a few people initially participated and sessions were held at her home. As time passed, hundreds of individuals attended in West Hollywood’s large hall. The work that she did with the AIDS patient brought her fame. She even appeared on Donahue and The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1988. That is what basically made You Can Heal Your Life a best-seller with over 50 million copies sold.

Hay House

In the year 1984, Louise Hay launched the Hay House Publishing Firm. By 1988 we saw Reid Tracy join as accountant. He eventually became the CEO. Business flourished and quickly attracted writers. At this point in time we see Hay House publishing audio and regular books by Wayne Dyer, Doreen Virtue and Deepak Chopra, among a total of over 130 writers.

Life Movie

In the year 2008, a movie called You Can Heal Your Life was released. It is basically a movie that talks about Hay’s life and features her teachings and how she managed to apply them. There are many notable authors and speakers that appear in the movie like Gay Hendricks, Doreen Virtue and Gregg Braden. Michael Goorjian (Emmy winning director) was responsible for directions.

As you can see, Louise’s life is an inspiration. She started from the bottom and reached the top, all with sheer will power and a wish to help others and herself. Never deny the importance of positive thinking. You never know what life throws at you but you can overcome anything.

Stress related illnesses are, by far, the number one reason for visiting a doctor. Their advice to avoid stress seems laughable in today’s frantically paced existence, but with the correct diet, exercise and a few minor adjustments to our normal routine it is possible to greatly reduce or, possibly, eliminate a condition that is known to have severe repercussions for our physical and mental well-being. Below are some useful tips for achieving a healthier mind and body.

Communication ‘A problem shared is a problem halved’, is a good philosophy to live by. Talking to someone about the way we are feeling lightens the load. Left to its own, stressed, devices the mind imagines wholly unrealistic and extremely negative reactions occurring should we confide in others. The brain experiences these scenarios as reality and goes into immediate survival mode. Chemicals are released which are intended to ready us for battle. Blood pressure rises; the heart races and the palms sweat as the body prepares itself to see off a threat. It is meant as a temporary measure until the threat has been averted, but constant stress sees these chemicals being constantly released and this state of high alert being maintained. The reality is that we are far more likely to find sympathy and a huge load of empathy when we confide in others. Everyone has at some time or other experienced feelings of inadequacy and, after listening to another’s woes will probably have a few confessions of their own to make.

Attitude Mental attitude goes a long way in determining how we cope with difficulties; positive thinking is a practised attribute. A point should be made of associating with people who talk and think positively, as this has a habit of rubbing off.

Light Relief It should also be remembered that sensationalism is what fills the media’s coffers. If listening to the news has a depressing effect, then it should either be avoided, or balanced with something uplifting and humorous soon after. Laughter also causes chemical reactions in the brain and nervous system, which have a feel-good effect; the more you laugh the longer this feeling will be maintained.

Keeping a journal Stress does not promote clear thinking and a jumble of thoughts and emotions are like an untidy closet; nothing is easily found. Keeping a journal not only has a similar effect to confiding in a friend, the ability to read back what is written creates a sense similar to that of listening to a friend confide. Having expressed our fears and insecurities in writing it allows us to see them more clearly and to more easily provide a solution.

Healthy Living Diet, fresh air and exercise play a vital role in mental and physical health. A minimum of 30 mins of exercise a day will, again, have the brain reacting favourably and releasing those all-important, feel-good hormones. Comfort eating usually involves rewarding ourselves with what tastes good, but is known to be bad for health. Stress burns energy and high energy snacks and drinks can compensate. Alcohol prevents that deep sleep that is necessary for the body’s revival and should be avoided or limited to one drink before bed. The recommended 8 hours of sleep a night will be more easily accomplished if time is taken for a little self-indulgence before bed: Relaxing in a bubble bath while listening to soothing music works wonders and a few scented candles lend a luxurious and exotic air. Meditating on the finer things in life is always beneficial and learning to do this instead of focusing on things like heavy traffic, which you cannot change, will pay huge health dividends.
