One of the most special days of the year is Valentine’s Day, but it can be hard to plan and prepare for. Take the headache out of getting a gift for him or her with this list of five great Valentine’s Day gifts.

Luxury Linen

For a gift that keeps on giving, get your special someone some luxury linen for their bed. This is the perfect Valentine’s gift if you share a sleeping space because you get to enjoy it too! Silk linens are incredibly soft and luxurious, so they are a great choice. If silk is not their style, Egyptian cotton has been renowned for centuries for its decadent luxury and softness on the skin. This makes it the perfect bed linen for you and your loved one.

A Special Experience

Look around online and you will find some amazing gift experiences that you can give to your special someone for Valentine’s Day. No matter what their interests are, there is something available to suit them. These are usually days out for two, so you can tag along to make it extra special. Hot air balloon trips are a great gift, or a race day if your loved one has always wanted to drive on a track. There is something for everyone, so you are guaranteed to find an experience that is perfect for them.

Draft Beer at Home

This is a great gift if you have a Valentine that enjoys a fine, cool beer from time to time. A home beer machine can be used with a variety of different kegs of beer. Whatever their favourite beer is, they can pour themselves a fresh cold one with a home draft machine. You can get up to 14 pints of beer from a single keg, and they work out much cheaper than you will pay down at the pub. They’re popular at parties, so don’t be surprised if friends keep finding reasons to visit after you get one.

Jewellery for Him or Her

Necklaces, earrings, cufflinks, and chains; there are plenty of different types of jewellery for him or her. This is always a welcome Valentine’s gift. Sometimes the traditional choice is the best one. For ladies, a beautiful and bejewelled necklace is the perfect gift. Men can be a little harder to find some jewellery for. If they wear a suit regularly, get some custom cufflinks with a shirt or two to match. A silver or gold tiepin can also make a great gift for him.

Make Some Dates

For a simple and affordable gift that can lead to even more romance, take a look at a scratch-off date poster. These are a lot of fun and make a nice addition to a bigger gift or can take centre stage if you are on a budget. The poster lists 100 great dates you can go on, and you get to scratch off the square after you have been out together. Look after it, and maybe in a year or so when you have ticked them all off you can have it framed as another Valentine’s gift.

Any one of these gifts is perfect for him or her. If you want to spoil your loved one, get all five! Make this Valentine’s extra special with one of these perfect gifts.

For some people, the Christmas holidays are mostly about spending time with family and friends, eating good food, having nice presents, and decorating their home in a fun and pretty way. However, while some people enjoy the more secular aspects for Christmas like Santa Claus and snuggling up to their favorite Christmas movies, for some Christians it can feel like the real religious reason we have a holiday on December 25th has been overshadowed a little. While everybody has their own ideas of what the perfect Christmas is like, if you prefer yours to be about Jesus, then it can be nice to look for things with the more Christian aspects of the holiday at their core, especially when it comes to decorations.

Here are three ways to incorporate things relating to the birth of Jesus into your home’s Christmas décor:

Nativity Scenes

The nativity is the story that the Christmas celebrations stem from, with Jesus being born in a manger in Bethlehem. While more modern stories have now become a part of the image of Christmas, like Santa and his elves, and some things relating to winter festivals that were traditional long before Christmas itself became a holiday, like Yule logs and snowmen, if you want your Christmas decorations to serve as a reminder of Jesus’ birth then a nice nativity scene is a must have. Whether you go for a small, ornate nativity inside your home, or a beautiful more life sized one in your garden, the scene of Mary and baby Jesus in the stable with the animals, shepherds and wise men is a lovely one to use in your festive decorations.

The Star

While a Christmas tree itself is a fairly recent tradition, which originally started in Germany (as did many of the modern things we associate with the holidays – Germany has always been a nation that really loves Christmas!), the star at the top of the tree is a reference to the star that the wise men from the East followed to find baby Jesus in Bethlehem and present him gifts as the newborn king. Some people now choose all kinds of different things for the top of the tree, from dolls that resemble fairies or angels through to abstract decorations that are just meant to add some sparkle and a pretty look, but the star is the traditional tree topper that reminds us of the Christmas story.

Gold

The most used colors in Christmas decorations are red and green, however using gold ornaments is also quite popular. Gold is used as a reminder of the first gift the baby Jesus was given by the wise men, who according to the bible gave him gold because they believed him to be the king that had been prophesized to them. Golden accents on your table setting for your Christmas meal, or in your general home decorations, keep with this part of the story of the first Christmas.

It can be easy to make your Christmas décor one that reminds you more of Jesus’ birth than of more commercial and secular aspects of the day like Santa, snow and gifts!

Modern-day life provides so much convenience that we often forget the true elements of nature. With an increasing number of people living in cities and urban areas, each passing year sees more and more people confined to their familiar settings. With so much to do in most cities, it can be easy to never have the need to leave the urban day-to-day life. This, however, is not how we’re designed to live. The separation of us from mother nature isn’t healthy and can make us forget about the simple pleasures of life. If you’re in the mood for a bit of adventure and need a change of routine, then consider the reasons why you absolutely need to get out of the city for the day.

Improved Focus and Mental Energy

Distractions: they’re everywhere in the hustle and bustle of city life. Our minds are constantly being disrupted by noises of technology, cars, people and a thousand other by-products of urban life. When you get out of the city and head toward calmer and more natural locales, a lot of these distractions fade away. Being able to merely think without such distractions will inevitably help restore a sense of concentration and focus that is impossible to achieve while being constantly hit with sounds, smells and sights that are unnatural. Additionally, this relaxation and calmness can help to boost mental energy levels in some people.

Stress Reduction

Daily life in cities can result in stress from a variety of factors. Environmental stress on physical well-being, emotional stress from family and work, and stress that results from the lack of exercise/endorphins are all common elements in modern urban life. Getting out of the city for just a day can help encourage more exercise while immersed in nature, which helps to naturally alleviate stress levels and improve well-being. So what are you waiting for? Grab a pair of hiking boots, jump in the car, and head for the nearest mountain, park or natural reserve to begin beating that age-old enemy known as stress.

Physical Benefits

Getting out of the city for a day and exploring the great outdoors can be the beginning of a wonderful, healthy trend. In addition to providing much needed exercise for those who languish away in urban environments, there are plenty of other physical health benefits to be enjoyed. First of all, preliminary evidence suggests that being active outdoors can significantly lower the rate of certain cancers. Additionally, several studies suggest that being active outdoors can reduce the rate of early mortality in a meaningful sense. Last but definitely not least, active outdoor exploration can help to improve the immune system’s response to a variety of illnesses.

Whether it’s to improve mental well-being, relieve stress or increase the likelihood of health outcomes, there are plenty of reasons to get outdoors and away from the city for at least one day – ideally, more often. What are some of your favorite outdoor activities? Let us know below in the comments section what helps to get you out of house.

Getting ready for a meditation retreat getaway is quite a big part of the process, one that few people pay close attention to. Meditation is aimed to de-stress you from the hassle of day-to-day life. Your mind is re-energized, just like your soul and body. However, if you go with a bad mindset or you are just not prepared, the experience is not going to be a pleasant one.

It does not matter if you are a highly experienced meditation enthusiast or just a novice. The steps below are going to be really helpful before travel starts. The advice offered is suitable for meditation retreats, yoga retreats and even spa holidays.

Go Prepared

The meditation retreat will most likely include many different wellness activities like swimming or fitness classes. This is why it is quite important that you know what you are going to go through. You do want to be sure that you have suitable clothing with you for perfect results. Obviously, you should not over-pack. Going to meditate is always a lot better if you take a minimalist approach. Having to worry about a lot of luggage can add completely unnecessary stress.

Learn All You Can About The Meditation Retreat

Always learn as much as possible about the meditation retreat so you are comfortable during your travel and as you reach your destination. This includes details about the surrounding areas. Be mindful about the traditions and cultures that currently exist in the destination that you will go to. That is going to help you to properly adapt and make the most of the experience.

Start Meditating Before You Travel

So many make the mistake of just meditating at the retreat. Why not get a jump start before traveling? Start meditating now so that by the time you reach the meditation retreat you are ready to take in everything that is going to be offered.

If you never meditated in the past, be sure that you consider meditation learning holidays. There are retreats that are going to offer you beginner and initiation classes. Expert guidance as you start meditating is important.

Clear Your Mind

This is much easier said than done. You want to focus on getting rid of all distractions that can cloud your judgment. Before you leave, try to reduce the amount of time you spend on your laptop or mobile phone. Do not check social media before sleep. A much better thing to do is to read a book. The idea is that you want to clear your mind a little before the meditation retreat and reduce stress. That gets you in a better mood and when you reach the retreat you will feel a lot better.

The winter solstice is now celebrated in many different cultures. This has been going on for thousands of years now, marking the brand new solar year with different practices. The Winter Solstice has been known in many under names like Yule. What is interesting is that you may already know this time of the year and you do not know it. We say this because in most parts of the world we actually celebrate Christmas. This common celebration has strong Pagan roots. The date of December 25th was set due to the wishes of Emperor Aurelian and it marked Roman Winter Solstice. Christians started celebrating Christmas as the day where Jesus was born in the year 273.

Many of the rituals, symbols, lore and customs connected with Christmas, the Winter Solstice, are connected to the Pagan cultures of ancient times. If you want to celebrate Christmas this year in a more Pagan way, just as in the past, here are some things to consider.

In many of the ancient cultures we had celebrations that were way longer than just one day. With this in mind, be sure that you celebrate for longer this year. Focus on interfaith aspects and the multicultural connection that is possible.

Use sacred colors and herbs to adorn your home. Use the Druidic colors like green, white and red. Use evergreen boughs, pine cones and holly in the home. Mistletoe can be added above the areas where a lot of people will socialize. Pagan symbols can be used to decorate and this is actually a pretty good idea if you truly want to celebrate Winter Solstice in the traditional way.

Always convey love to your friends, co-workers and family. This celebration is all about love. In Saturnalia there was a custom where friends and family did feast together and then exchanged presents. This is what inspired the current Christmas traditions but you can take it one step further by simply organizing something a gathering.

Change the way you look at Santa Claus. You should know that Santa Claus has a strong Pagan background. The characteristics that appear now are a mix of Cronos, the Holly King, Father Ice, Thor, Saturn, Frey and Odin. Because of this, try to teach the children about all these aspects.

Never forget about light. The Solstice Eve ritual will offer you a great experience. Indoor fireplaces and outdoor fire will be great. Sing the Pagan carols and then light up the entire home.

The Winter Solstice will always be about helping others. Because of this, make sure that you donate something. You do not necessarily need to donate money. Clothing and food will be appreciated by the people that are poor near where you live. Alternatively, try to volunteer for a charity. This is a great time of the year to basically give back.

Learn more about the Winter Solstice and think about what celebrations are great for you this year. There are so many options available, all based on the culture that you get inspiration from.

The winter solstice is basically an astronomical type of phenomenon that marks the year’s shortest day and longest night. For those who live in the Northern Earth Hemisphere this astronomic phenomenon is known as the December solstice. However, for those who live in the Southern Earth Hemisphere, this astronomical event is known as the June solstice.

What This Astronomical Phenomenon Represents

For those who might not be familiar with details about the winter solstice, we thought it would be useful and interesting to reveal some of the unknown details about the phenomenon. First of all, during the solstice, the axial tilt of the Earth occurs which brings various gyroscopic effects due to its daily rotation. This means that two opposite points in the sky change in a very slow motion managing to make a full circle every 26.000 years.

Winter in One Hemisphere, summer in the Other Hemisphere

Due to the way in which the Earth follows the orbit around the Sun, we see the polar hemisphere facing towards the sun half of the year, thus enabling the season we know as summer. The other half of the year, the Sun faces away from the sun resulting the winter season as we know it. How is this possible? Because the two hemispheres always face opposite sides along the Earth axis. This is how it is possible for half of the hemisphere to experience winter while the other experiences the summer season.

Various Interpretations across Cultures

The winter solstice has been interpreted differently in various cultures for many years. In some of these culture it is considered a sign of recognition for the process of rebirth whereas others just know it for the type of holidays it symbolizes.

Halloween and Christmas are the two holidays that are practically known all around the world. Halloween is really old, with an age of over 3,000 years. Many think that this is a tradition that appeared in USA but that is definitely not the case. In fact, the roots of the holidays are found in Anglo-Saxon and Celtic traditions. In France we do see Halloween being celebrated right now but how did this happen? Let us learn about how celebrations started in France and what happens right now.

French Halloween Celebrations Beginnings

There is this belief that Halloween was celebrated by Gauls with the name Samain. The holiday was seen as marking summer’s end and the start of the dark season. Between October 31st and the first day of November we had the New Year at that point in time. Various druidical rites took place then.

The folk celebration we see now as Halloween appeared in the country during the eighties. At that point in time we saw just English speaking communities that celebrated the holiday in restaurants or bars. French started to celebrate Halloween at the start of the nineties. During the year 1992 we saw Cesar, a fancy dress costume company, working on doing business in France. That is interesting because in USA we saw the large Halloween celebrations starting only in the year 1997 so France was ahead of the curb.

Halloween Celebrations In France

In most cases Halloween is celebrated in France by people that are young. They wear costumes and go to parties in clubs, homes or other locations. Costumes are normally scary in tradition with ghosts, witches and vampires being highly popular as opposed to superheroes or princesses. The latter are more popular in Great Britain or United States.

In France we do not see trick or treating. The commercial centers and stores will normally decorate pastry, candy and windows with a Halloween theme. The actual trick or treating celebration is only seen among some French kids in smaller communities.

Modern French Halloween Celebrations

Right now, we see that French Halloween is seen as being quite controversial because of many different reasons. The large controversy appears because of the fact that the period between the last day of October and November 2 is when older French generations honor saints, attend religious services and visit some cemeteries. Halloween is considered as being a distraction by those people and they believe that it is a lack of respect in celebrating dead individuals.

We also see Halloween boycotting that appears because of the belief that the holiday is just a marketing strategy that is used by Americans.

In the past we did see that Halloween was highly successful, especially in the period around 2000. Nowadays, in the last 5 to 6 years, a lot of religious and political controversy appeared and opposition is stronger. Halloween in France is faced with a decline, with shops and streets not being decorated as often and as fabulously as they used to be.

Colombia stands out as one of the countries that have a lot of national public holidays, summing up to around twenty days every single year. In addition, there are many festivals and carnivals. We are talking about a Catholic country so the main celebrations are held around Easter and Christmas time. The month that is the most celebrated is December.

The main holidays and festivals, those that have the highest international and domestic visibility include those below.

Black And White Festival

Traditionally held in January, this is a 3 days carnival festival in Pasto. The showcase includes various Afro-Colombian, Colombian, Spanish colonial and indigenous rituals. On the 28th of December we have the pre-carnival stage that starts. Actual festival celebrations begin on January 4th with a really large parade. The following 2 days include celebrations with various themes. On the fifth of January, participants dress in black or use black cosmetics while on the following day they replace black with white, thus giving the festival its suggestive name.

Manizales Festival

Also held in January, this is a one week-long festival held every single year right after Cali’s Festival. We have quite clear European and Spanish influences that are visible, with many extraordinary events like bull running. Traditions will be mixed with some that are 100% Colombian, mostly focused on the coffee industry.

Barranquilla Carnival

Held in February, this four days festival is one of the biggest of all the Colombian events. The UNESCO UN cultural body sees the importance of the festival as one that is high, highlighting it with the label “intangible heritage of humanity”. There are many days that feature music, dancing, drinking and parades.

Easter Holiday

If you want to experience Easter processions in a different way than in the rest of the country, head over towards Popayan, which is a historic small city. We have a very interesting religions procession here that sees various holiday related wooden carvings being carried along a two kilometres route around the city. During the holy week, this happens every single month. It is a tradition that is long lasting and that attracts so many visitors every single year. However, the event still remains sober.

World Salsa Festival

Held in August, the World Salsa Festival takes place in the capital of the music genre, Cali. We have an 8 days festival that features thousands of artists, musicians and dancers. Around twenty national orchestras appear every year and we see so many events that are planned. That will include talks, salsa lessons, workshops and shows.

Independence Celebration And National Beauty Pageant – Cartagena

This is such an interesting celebration that marks the independence obtained in 1811 from the Spanish. The festival features traditional dances, fireworks and so much music that you will love what you see. As the title above entitles, the beauty pageant is the main attraction, an event that will crown the representative of Colombia for the Miss Universe contest.

Festival Of Cali

Last but not least, the Festival of Cali is a 5 days festival that is held between New Year and Christmas. There is always an inaugural concert that will see an attendance of around 60,000 individuals. Various parades and music concerts exist, with high profile music stars in Latin America being invited every year.

As you most likely already know, just as with all the other American traditions, Thanksgiving is celebrated all around the world. We actually tend to think that this is a 100% unique US holiday. That is not actually the case. In fact, there are many harvest time traditions and celebrations that appear all around the world.

One of the most known traditions dates back to ancient Greek. That was when there was a 3 day festival that appeared in order to honor the grains and corn goddess, Demeter. One similar celebration honoured Ceres, the equal goddess for Romans. Roman celebrations included parades, feasts similar to Thanksgiving, music, sports and games. You may want to know that cornucopia, a prominent symbol of Thanksgiving, dates back to these two cultures.

In ancient China we had a special harvest festival that was named Chung Ch’ui. It was harvesting harvest moon. During celebrations, families gathered for feasts including the moon cakes, which are round yellow cakes.

When we look at Jewish cultures, the similar Thanksgiving celebrations were held through the Sukkot harvest festival. Festivals in this culture date back around 3,000 years now. A branches hut named Sukkot is built. A Jewish family eats meals right under this Sukkot for a period of 8 days.

Ancient Egyptians were holding harvest celebrations honouring Min, god of fertility and vegetation. It is common to see sports, music and parades included in festivities.

It is not only the ancient cultures that celebrated harvest festivals. We have the main forerunner of Thanksgiving in Lammas Day, which is celebrated in British Isles. This is when everyone goes to church with a bread loaf coming from their very first harvest of wheat. Churches bless bread and thank for the harvest that appeared in that year.

We also have a direct relation between Thanksgiving and the Puritan practice of having individual thanksgiving days arranged. Those were religious occasions that usually came after great difficulty. Puritans praised God and the fact that He helped during hardships. While the American Thanksgiving is not religious in nature, there is a similarity in the presence of gratitude.

On the first day of each month of the year, there is a 10 days meditation retreat that is hosted by Wat Suan Mokkh. Every single meditation seeker is welcomed, no matter what is practiced. The only problem is that the conditions here are pretty rugged. People live plainly here and do try to do all that they can to protect nature. The cell phone is turned in when you register. You get straw mat beds and pillows made out of wood. All people wake up at 4 AM and on the whole, this monk experience is authentic and English instructions are available for all that want them.

Ala Kukui – Hawaii

When thinking about Hawaii, we normally think about relaxation at the beach, cocktails and hula dancers. Ala Kukui is like that but with a lot more since it was inspired by the September 11 terrorist attacks. We are talking about a sanctuary that welcomes all people looking for relaxation and meditation. There are some special options that are available, like a residential retreat that is aimed for war veterans, helping them deal with PTSD problems, together with loss and grief. Yoga and writing or even hula stand out as extra options available.

Mobile Mermaid – Finca Amorosa – Spain

This is a meditation retreat that is aimed for those that practice pilates. If you do enjoy pilates, you will want to consider it. Mobile Mermaid is run by Susie Mermaid, holistic therapist. The classes are held at the Finca Amorosa farmhouse, which is located right in Andalucia. Morning and evening pilates sessions of 90 minutes are held, combined with sessions of massage, cultural excursions and guided walks. You can also enjoy the pool and the meals all include ingredients that are locally sourced.
